last seconds goal line clearance from Watmore shot gives a deserved point for Donny who came to do a job and we could not break them down in a decent second half performance OaU
We were much better second half but lacked that cutting edge. The delivery from out wide was a bit underwhelming but we were still unlucky not to edge it.
Credit to Donny they defended well. We played our usual game in the second half but they just about held on.
Movement is really holding us back up front, the balls are going in but there’s a lack of movement to find that space required to score
Big positive from to-night was the performance of Lafferty, who looked a step up from Wyke who was to be fair battered, and given no protection from a terribly weak referee.
Doncaster looked dead on their feet at the end, they do well tbh. Another clean sheet for us and another point, that'll do. Tomorrow will be interesting watching everyone else squirm
The run goes on, not the desired result and maybe didnt do enough to win it. Onwards to the Wirral in midweek.
Player ratings from Roker Report: https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2020/1/24/21079866/player-ratings-sunderland-0-0-doncaster-heres-how-the-lads-rated-after-tonights-draw Jon McLaughlin: 6/10 Had very little to do, made his one save well. Jordan Willis: 5/10 Started the game strongly, but got worse as the game wore on, looked ruffled and uncomfortable in possession for most of the match. Alim Ozturk: 5/10 Missed headers, poor tackles and slack passing, a subpar performance. Joel Lynch: 5/10 Defended his 18-yard box well, but didn’t offer enough composure or quality on the ball. Luke O’Nien: 6/10 Dominant in the air, average on the ground, one of Sunderland’s better players on a teamwide off night. Max Power: 5/10 Another player who didn’t show anywhere near enough care or quality in possession. George Dobson: 6/10 A typical combative performance, full of great energy, containing some outstanding tackles in the middle of the park. Denver Hume: 7/10 Most of Sunderland’s best play came from Hume’s combination down the left with Lynden Gooch, his take-ons and drilled crosses were a real asset in a cagey game. Chris Maguire: 5/10 It was Maguire’s careless square balls that really gave Doncaster the belief they could win at the Stadium of Light. Lynden Gooch: 7/10 What’s this?! A confident Sunderland player showing the ability to make an impact in a League One match?! The only Sunderland player who performed to a reasonable standard, should have seen more of the ball. Charlie Wyke: 4/10 The quality of service Wyke received was so poor, it’s almost impossible to judge his performance. But on the occasions he did get the ball, his quality was awful, he looked flat-footed and one-paced all night. (SUB) Kyle Lafferty: 7/10 Linked play effectively in a brief 15-minute cameo. (SUB) Duncan Watmore: 7/10 Looked sharp, and produced one outstanding run that should have led to a dangerous free kick. Man of the Match Lynden Gooch
