Quality in Ligue 1 maybe, but he was ****ing dogshit for us and clearly couldn't hack this league. What kind of clown says that being criticised foe wearing a tuxedo was the reason for his bad form?
So was Remy Cabella, so was Debuchy. Didn't stop them from underachieving with us. Although Gouffran was never a full international and he did far better than all of them. Being a full international isn't the gold standard, Colback got an England call up remember. You can blame McClaren for some of Thauvin's failure, but he clearly wasn't gonna cut it in this league whatever, played a decent number of games and look way out of depth.
Ah Gouffran, I had intentionally sent that name into the deepest darkest recess of my mind Palace. Surprisingly jobless since his stellar time here
It's all about attitude and I hate to stereotype but the French can be moody bastards, especially depending on what part of France they come from. They join, it's not what they expect and boom their desire is gone. They know they can toodle off back home and start for a Ligue 1 side, who require far less effort. Gouffran did a job for us, he was a decent squad player. We now have "squad players" like Atsu, Colback and Ki.
Cos he's much younger than the others I mentioned. Jon Dahl Thomasson would definitely have been a success here if we'd managed him right, instead we tried to make him sole striker as a kid and heaped a massive amount of pressure on him instead of giving him the supported he needed. He left, and played in teams that played him the right way and became one of Denmarks best ever players. Luuk De Jong was the opposite, not cut out for the physicality/speed of the Prem league and was a flop with us, goes back to the ****ty and easy Dutch league and scores for fun. He wouldn't have been a hit here even if we'd given him more chances. Thauvin might have been saddled with a **** manager when he was here, but he looked very lightweight and vulnerable and a clear weak link in the team. He goes back to easy French league and becomes a hit there. Yes he's a better player now, but when he was here as well as being too lightweight, he had an attitude and was blaming others for his failure and was clearly not pulling his weight, I really can't see him having become a good player with us.
What do you mean "since his time here"? He was immediately signed after us and went to Turkey for 2 years. Shame if hasn't got a club now, cos he properly smashed it in championship season.
I don't think JDT was ever that great, not in the same league as other Danes such as the Laudrups or Schmeichels. Not saying we didn't do a bad job - we did - but he wasn't amazing anywhere. LDJ/Thauvin I agree. One was a striker, the other a winger, they were played in position so no two ways about it they couldn't cut it. There's a reason Thauvin's still in France. I don't know how we build a transfer strategy to support a better way of playing. Signing the likes of Joelinton isn't going to help.
It's incredible that Inter signed this lad, and after 4 games were like "ok, you're ****ing ****e man." Now they're trying to ship him out at a bargain price. Why would anyone ever go for that?
It seems to be a tactic we have in the market. I suspect we miss out in players and if they fail at the club they go to we go back in.
