Roger Scruton: Conservative thinker dies at 75

Conservative philosopher and author Sir Roger Scruton has died aged 75.

The author of more than 50 books on aesthetics, morality and politics, he was also a government advisor. Supporters hailed him as "the greatest conservative of our age".

A statement on his website said he had been fighting cancer for six months and "died peacefully" on Sunday.

"His family are hugely proud of him and of all his achievements," it said.

Sir Roger was at the centre of controversy last year when he was dismissed from, then reinstated to, an unpaid role as a government housing advisor after criticism of his comments about China and Muslim immigrants.

After he was restored to the role when supporters said his remarks had been misrepresented, he said there was a "witch-hunt" against right-wing figures, aiming to characterise them as racist or fascist.

Roger Scruton, an entertaining figure, the worlds foremost conservative philosopher who, by his own admission, had zero influence on the Tory Party, has died.

Which of the following did he say/write?
    1. Democracy is a contagion
    2. There is no such thing as date rape
    3. Stability, authority and tradition are the basis of society
    4. Not only hanging, but also flogging, should be a well used punishment
    5. Education should be about instilling an appreciation of European high culture (opera and literature) into the young
    6. It is the duty of a true conservative to take up fox hunting.

While there is little I agree with in his political oeuvre, it’s important to get lots of different perspectives into the public arena, and Scruton did this with fearlessness under pretty relentless attack and with plenty of good humour. His proper philosophy on aesthetics was very interesting.

A photo I took of Roger Scruton's office in his Wiltshire farmhouse. This is one idea of heaven.

Ex-Ranger George Petchey died this week aged 88.

Born in Whitechapel on June 24th 1931, George moved from West Ham to Rangers in July 1953. He played 278 league and cup games for us and scored 24 goals in a seven-year spell – and was an ever-present in two seasons.

Petchey transferred to Crystal Palace in June 1960. After retirement, he managed Leyton Orient and Millwall.

Our thoughts are with George’s family and friends at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

I must admit haven't heard of him, David Olney, Nashville folk singer, while in the middle of his third song on stage, apologized to his audience, closed his eyes and died, still holding his guitar and still sitting on his stool. Beautiful. Rest in Peace David<rose>

Very sad news. Monty Python was a classic piece of television and film history. We were so lucky as kids to see, witness the fresh Python shows. Some much better than the crap they put out today. It was also a good source for existentialism examples for Uni papers.
RIP Terry Jones you made me laugh and cry watching your work.

Part of a great innovative team. Part of my youth. Won’t ever be matched or repeated.
Great words from Stephen Fry “Farewell, Terry Jones. The great foot has come down to stamp on you. My god what pleasure you gave, what untrammelled joy and delight. What a wonderful talent, heart and mind”.
RIP Terry. You truly left your mark.

just how fragile is life? A footie player on a night out....

Matlock Town footballer Jordan Sinnott dies after 'assault on night out'
A Matlock Town FC player has died after being attacked during a night out, police have said.
Jordan Sinnott was found unconscious in Market Place, Retford, Nottinghamshire, at about 02:00 GMT on Saturday.
Police had earlier been called to a "large-scale fight" at a pub car park in the town, hours before the 25-year-old midfielder was discovered.
He was in a critical condition with a fractured skull and died later in hospital. A man has been arrested.
The 27-year-old remains in police custody being questioned on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
On Saturday, non-league club Matlock Town said players found out about Mr Sinnott's condition when they arrived for their match against Mickleover Sports and "agreed it should be postponed to a future date".
The club issued a statement after he died, which said: "His family and friends were with him at his bedside and we send our sincere condolences to them all at this very sad time."
Mr Sinnott was on loan from Alfreton Town, who also issued a statement in which they described the player as a "model footballer and an exceptional talent".
    • Police said officers had attended a "large-scale fight" between eight men and women at the Dominie Cross pub car park in Grove Street, hours before Mr Sinnott was found.
"Officers were later called to assist ambulance crews who were attempting to treat Mr Sinnott after he was found unconscious with a suspected fractured skull following a subsequent incident," Nottinghamshire Police said later on Saturday.

Police said a 27-year old man suffered a suspected broken nose and a 44-year old man was left with a suspected broken jaw.
Det Insp Wilson said: "Our detectives are continuing their enquiries to understand how three men came to sustain their injuries.
"This incident happened at a very busy time and we believe there are still a number of witnesses who have still not come forward."
Mr Sinnott, from Bradford, is the son of former footballer Lee Sinnott and made his debut at Huddersfield Town against Leicester City in 2013.
Earlier this month he scored the first hat-trick of his career during a game against Basford United.
Mr Sinnott previously had spells at Halifax Town and Chesterfield.

Just found out my nephew was assaulted by a bouncer in Southampton last nught, one punch and he went down, bashing his head on the pavement and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital - could have been so much worse. He's studying foitball at Uni, and has a job lined up working for TUI in Lanzarote in the summer, and that may all fall through on the back of this - there's some total ****s out there...
