The incident didn’t officially happen, as the player was offside, so therefore no penalty and no booking. The referee would have merely scrubbed it, and it won’t be in his game report. It doesn’t show on the match stats for that game.
Referees in the Premier League have been advised to start using pitchside monitors from this weekend if a VAR recommends changing a decision on a red card, Sky Sports News has confirmed. Last month, FIFA president Gianni Infantino told Sky Sports News he wanted to see referees use pitchside monitors and he was unaware they hadn't been used in the Premier League this season. "The job of the referee is so difficult, these guys are heroes, we are all criticising them so let's help them and they have to accept the help," said Infantino. "They have a safety net when they are not sure or when somebody who sees the images telling them to go and check. They should go and check."
So not much change really - just for Kabasele type incidents. You will still get the same mess with offsides and handballs.
At the moment I see it as this: BEFORE - Let the officials mess it up a bit, some right, some wrong linesmen chip in with the same. NOW - As above but with a wait involved and those screen watchers doing the same and confusing the fans. Shame really. It could be decent if it is used correctly.
I remember listening to Dermot Gallagher talking about video reviews, before they had ever been used. Whatever you think of him as a ref, he said something that I think is very pertinent now, as we question the value of VAR. He said the real benefits wouldn’t be seen. The deterrent factor of intentionally diving for a penalty, would all but disappear, because it would definitely be reviewed. Something like CCTV acting as a deterrent to whatever crime - you might not see that crime on the camera, but then you would question whether the cameras were worth having - it’s the crimes you would not see that are most important. This came back to me when we played Bournemouth. Gone was the time watching that fixture that we were afeared that some cheating diver would try and steal some undeserved points from us. Losing that fear made the game more enjoyable because Bournemouth had to come back into the game via merit. Funny how they find themselves languishing these days, eh?
Benefits of VAR technology... no one can argue with that It was, to be exact, 10.04mm not over the line
Well maybe but Kabasele got sent off with it . The screen was used in the Norwich v Bournemouth game! Leeds lost to a goal which was handball - shame !
oh poor Leeds My Leeds United friends all think they are going downhill again this season... for the last few seasons the first half has been brilliant and then they have stumbled...... My only interest in them going up is it would be a home game for me....
They seem to do a Watford of the past few seasons, start well and then nosedive. Either that or the pressure start building, getting too much and they bottle it.
