Strangely if we could wipe our collective memories of everything pre-2016 (including the "successful" mid-90's) then I don't think we'd have anywhere near the vitriol we currently have. The club's just not in a bad spot at all. Everyone's struggling to keep up and the big spending still sits with a select few. The books are balanced and we've been spending in line with our size. I don't think it's £40m Joelinton, I think it was a mix of things; overall cost, as well as using Rogon to get St Max. Which is about right. We're not the only ones who jizzed cash for strikers up the wall. Haller at West Ham and Wesley at Villa have both been on par with Joelinton.
The problem is Mike Ashley compounded by the **** given by Lee Charnley. Rafa bought players to get out of the Championship but because of the contracts given by Charnley (rightly or wrongly) we now cannot offload these players. Rafa was then clearly promised plenty of funds to buy new players hence why he bought players like Murphy for the development squad but then soon realised he had spent all allocated monies. Steve Bruce now needs to build on the defensive legacy of Rafa - and to be honest isn't doing as bad as I thought he would.
Fact and fiction have no real meaning anymore, whether it's Trump lying through his teeth, or people here bigging up the Rafa myth. The absolute worse style of play for 3 years and people suggesting Bruce should be building on that! Bruce is what he is, I for one have much more enjoyed the football this year, despite it all. It was no miracle that we stayed up, rather it was a relegated premier league side that then had 180 million spent on it. The 'legacy' is clear to see, Bruce needs time to change the way we play (and there are many signs of that having started) and bring in the types of players to facilitate that. They do not have to be expensive. Mid table this year and a little cup run, then onwards and upwards next.
I'd say part of the problem is that teams that want to play anything other that 10 men behind the ball, dogs of war style football, are going to struggle in this league. Bournemouth and Norwich are in the bottom 3, Watford were in there until a change or manager and style. There are the top 6-8 teams that have players that allow them to play more expansive in various ways, there are a core of teams that with fight and scrap and finish between europe spot and 17th depending on other results (Burnley, Palace) then there are teams like ourselves that don't want to be in the "dogs of war" bracket, however will struggle to get results against the the other 2 groups of teams as we can't out play the top or outfight the middle.
We dealing with peil While I respect other peoples opinions are you seriously suggesting we will finish mid table and then top half next season?
Yep and willing to bet you on it my chaotic friend. I was one of the few willing to state how confident I was about this season before it started. Sadly it's only the online 'fans' who are yet to get on board with the progress despite all of the barriers. Back in the day, one of the reasons why Newcastle was everyone's second team was lot about the fanbase. I think that largely survives, this here interwebby thing attracts the tails of the distribution curve and does not reflect the views of the many. It's why you and I like it (albeit opposite tails and me much closer to the 95th percentile than you )
