Good point Fran it's complex solutions to a complex problems. On a recent post I said local solutions for world problems. I'm interested in the bamboo products chain from raw material to customer. We certainly saw options to plastic straws in Bali our last trip.
Talking about the problems of monoculture https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jan/07/honeybees-deaths-almonds-hives-aoe
Just a thought and not claiming knowledge...you'd need to ask an agronomist, but how do you manage soil quality in the absence of animal waste. If all our food was sourced from vegetables and herds of animals were no longer kept, such that cows, sheep, pigs etc were only kept in zoos, what does that mean for soil management?
Good question that I've not heard asked before Fran. My first thought was possibly using treated human sewage... I await an agromonist to educate me as I don't want to start googling that this late. Changed my mind, found this article about olive farming and reusing waste product from that industry https://www.theguardian.com/lifeand...us-sapiens-the-farmers-who-shun-animal-manure
Here is a great article that does go into to explaining some of the relationship with animals, forestry and soil condition. It paints a picture of how natural farming have so many benefits and with all this stuff in the news about lab grown food etc it's well worth reading. https://www.theguardian.com/environ...side-down-mob-grazing-on-a-cumbrian-hill-farm
Some of you won’t need any excuse to watch Jane Fonda, but here she is accepting, of all things, the Glamour magazine Woman of the Year award on behalf of Greta Thunberg. It really is worth watching all of this:
An absolutely brilliant post Chilco and thanks so much for digging that out. I think I would walk off a cliff if Jane Fonda asked me to . To see her so emotional and feeling so much for Greta Thunberg and what she is achieving is extremely moving. A lot of us will remember Jane Fonda in the anti Vietnam war protests and the way the system vilified and abused her but she stayed true to herself and didn't buckle. What a great woman she is. Now climate crisis issues are starting to be raised by seriously famous people, as well as the younger generation, more and more people will listen. God bless Greta Thunberg and Jane Fonda for what they, and all the other activists around the world, are doing.
You and me both Kaito, but sit down and hold on to something: last month Jane celebrated her 82nd birthday!
Some people are just beautiful human beings and age doesn't mean anything. 82 years of age, what a woman.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51040155 Another article discussing how replacing plastic packaging may not be such a straightforward 'good thing'. A lot more research needed.
While people are idolising Jane Fonda, spare a moment for what she was saying. Everyone, EVERYONE, needs to look at themselves and their attitude and ask themselves, WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE THE SITUATION? Because you can do a lot. There are many answers right under your fingertips. Just ask the question.
I think that was the point of her speech TSS. We all need to change things in our lives, but it won't be enough if we can't change the way the world is run.
TSS, you are correct that everyone needs to take ownership of this climate emergency and as individuals we can all do so much more to reduce our personal pollution footprint. Chilco is also correct in saying that what we do is going to be too little to prevent the catastrophic effects of global warming and mass species extinction. The real changes have to be made on a scale that matches the problem. If we take food as just one example, we have to accept that the way food is produced on such a colossal industrial scale is completely unsustainable and it is destroying the very soil our food is grown in. Many crops are now only possible to grow if the soil is pumped full of ever more aggressive fertilisers and sprayed with poisons that inevitably find their way into our rivers, our oceans and our own bodies. In the future we can not expect to have whatever we want, when we want it. Our supermarkets and fast food outlets are awash with a ridiculous amount of food while more than half the planet exist on very little. That can't continue. We have to lower our expectations, reduce our intake and live better. We have to accept that just about everything has to change. The current political systems which continue to prove themselves to be corrupt and in the pocket of big business need replacing with new politics based on the health and well being of of the citizens of this planet. It doesn't matter whether we are from London, Lebanon or Lahore, everyone matters and no one is expendable, nor should anyone be accepted as collateral damage in the relentless march of global capitalism. The way things are in the world today is criminally unfair, with many indigenous people living at the front line of climate chance, yet these people are the least heard and least regarded. The truth is that indigenous people have their finger on the pulse of the planet and they are able to recognise the shift and imbalances that are taking place, and they are very frightened of what is coming. This video of Greta Thunberg at the COP25 summit is well worth watching .....
They've had that for years (maybe not on the FA Cup but on lots of other sporting events). Used to be you just needed to have a fiver in your account and you could watch loads of live sport
Obviously I am not speaking to people who "get it". When I make a post regarding the climate (and I have been banging on about it for 30 years to anyone who will seriously listen). I am speaking to those who don't know but are willing to read or listen. Latterly I have become a constant reminder to people that if we had started this 30 years ago, this would have all been settled by now.
Quick break in work: I propose a stickied Environment and Pollution thread. Most important subject in the world. Won't always be cheerful. Won't always be bad news either. I actually know a stack of hopeful stuff.
In our stickied section we have; 1. A Music Thread. 2. A Politics Thread. 3. A prediction league Thread. 4. A Matchday Thread and 5. An Off Topic Thread. So we have 2 threads for unrelated to football discussion we then have a 3rd thread dedicated to unrelated to football discussion. Out of the 5 threads on a football forum only 2 are related to football. Even the transfer thread isn't stickied. Having said that though keeping this discussion to a paticular thread is a good idea but I'm not sure it needs to be stickied. If people want to humour you then the thread will stay near the top of the page any way.
