no. he is not a first rate striker, but he definitely has the potential to be a decent one.

to a degree you can coach players where to run, when to pass, how to bend runs etc, but you can't teach them instinct. best clearly has that ability to be in the right place at the right time, he just needs a quality striker beside him to compensate for his lack of general play. e.g. rooney and hernandez at man utd, brilliant foils. (not saying best is as good as hernandez, but still)

Stats can be misleading...yes. But goal stats can't be in my opinion. He scores goals, therefore he is a good striker. Not necessarily a good footballer, but a good striker.

Leon Best's stats are great but he hasn't played much so they aren't as amazing as they sound. I'm gonna wait till the end of the season to make my judgements on Best.

Yes he actually HAS BEEN FIRST-RATE and if he continues his form then I'll classify him as a ''Good Premier League Striker'' which HE currently is.

FFS.. stop hating on the lad!

I think this has got to be right, if the goals continue to appear. You just can't say "Sure, he scores lots of goals but he isn't a good striker" anymore than you can say "He keeps lots of clean sheets but is **** as a 'keeper"

If he continues in this form he will have to go down as the greatest striker in the history of the prem.

Agree. When Torres was on form at Liverpool he wasn't a good footballer. He couldn't dribble well, he couldn't pass and he couldn't cross. He could score goals, and that's what a good striker does. Not that I am comparing Best to Torres! Just an example...

You should compare Best to him actually. Torres hasn't been the same since he left Liverpool and in that time Best has DEFINITELY been better than him!

Sure Best isn't the quicknest, cleverest or the best dribbler but he's a GREAT finisher and that's what counts. Also his movement is decent enough!

Based on the stats from the last year, Best is a first rate goalscorer. Whether he can sustain that for a prolonged period (the mark of a true top stirker) we'll have to wait and see.

Also, depends what you class as a "striker" too, as he is a first rate goalscorer, but he doesn't do too much other than score goals. If you want someone to hold up play, cover the midfiled by tracking back, and create chances for others, he's not your man.

No, he had a decent back half of last seaon he's started well this but he's still got a long long way to go before he can be considered great. He's a poor mans/tight bastards darren bent in my eyes, bit of pace, good touch, generally scores by simply bein in the right place at the right time not bad traits to have I agree, but doesnt bring enough to the team for me and if he doesnt get on the score sheet more often than not he might aswel have not been on the pitch

This is similar to saying if we don't keep clean sheets, Taylor may as well not be on the pitch as he doesn't bring a great deal else to the team. Best is there to score goals, which he's doing, so i'm happy. Shola on the other hand...

Bloody hell, we said that about Kevin Nolan all last season in midfield and people are still annoyed he's gone. Best is perfectly allowed to be a goalscorer!

Alan Pardew has already said Best is working hard in training to improve his hold up play and aerial ability I have every faith in the player.

with regards to the nolan comment am not one of them, as for taylor ad say it's not that similar at all and he brings more to the team than just his defensive abilities, playing the ball out from the back for example rather than just hoofing it clear as some other centre halves like to do, think he also helps to motivate/lift the players at times. Obviously I know he's there to score goals but is it so wrong to want to see a bit more from him? The main reason I even got involved with this thread is because I think a few ppl seem to be getting carried with themselves as to how good best actually is, this thread makes him sound like jardel

How can we be questioning whether or not Best should be in the team when he's scoring in almost every game he plays. There is no reason not to play Best right now, as he is one of the players who would jump at the chance of a longer contract - even on Mike Ashley pay - So long as he keeps this up he could be the top striker we needed to sign in the summer.(He certainly has the stats to convince Ashley so far)

Just imagine if we has signed someone like Cisse for $13 and he had popped up with what Best has already contributed. We'd be singing about having bought a team to be competing in the champions league right now.

I see the same people on this forum putting Shola in their starting 11 now in this thread saying Best shouldn't be playing because he isn't proven. You know who you are

If Leon has 10 goals by Christmas what are the chances Liverpool will come in with a £35m bid?!
