i remember mourinho doing a job on him with inter by putting a right footed defender (so say sagna) and left back. what it did was, when messi inevitably cuts inside, the defender is able to keep up with him much more efficiently because its always easier moving off in the direction to what foot you are. so for example, say you're left footed, and you're being asked to change direction quickly to your right (which is what always happens when a left back plays against messi), you'd find it much tougher than if you were asked to change direction quickly and run to the left. its all to do with how your most dominant leg is developed. not saying its how to stop messi, but its one way mourinho did it. sorry if ive confused you also
