Kick off 12.31. A minute delay on all fixtures. Part of an initiative to highlight mental health well being amongst fans. laudable or unnecessary? Anyway which City will turn up and how many youngsters blooded? did that big kid in midfield for them last season get snapped up? Good player, name escapes me. Anyway I fancy a Cup run this year. City 3-1.
I was surprised how much of a struggle this was. Rotherham gave us David Seaman, Duggie Brown, Chuckle Brothers, William Hague, Ivy Tilsley and Howard Webb. The Rotherham Advertiser was the crucible in which the UK's leading literary light, Jeremy Clarkson, was smelted. They made many of the cannons for HMS Victory and the steel plates for the SS Great Eastern. Jamie Oliver's television series Jamie's Ministry of Food (2008) was based in Rotherham. He aimed to make Rotherham "the culinary capital of the United Kingdom" The brick-built glass making furnace, the Catcliffe Glass Cone, is the oldest surviving structure of its type in Western Europe. The first Rotherham United home strip was yellow and black. Rotherham United are called the Millers because there is a Hovis Mill near to the ground. Rotherham played in the first ever League Cup Final, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Aston Villa in 1961. Rotherham United came from the merging of Rotherham Town and Rotherham County.
It's now confirmed as pay on the gate. McCann has said he'll make some changes, but hasn't got that many options and still wants a cup run (McLoughlin's expected to start and Kane will also be in the squad).
Ajayi. Now at West Brom. We will probably see Kane, Lewis-Potter, Bowler, Tafazolli and Ingram start tomorrow. And maybe McLaughlin, Bonds and Berry coming off the bench. Debut-tastic!
Yes, it was. Added to Waggy and the total cost was £120,000 which was slightly more than the world record transfer fee at the time, the £115,000 Man Utd paid for Denis Law. That would mean us spending over £90 million on 3 players now to do the same. Shows what has happened to football in the intervening years.
Apart from Denis what was some other transfers around that time? Was that the norm for a third?? Division player?
I would expect McCann to play several reserves with a home game against Fulham coming up. We beat them 3-0 away and a win could put us in the Top-6 playoff spots. Ingram McKenzie Pennington Tafazolli McLaughlin Bowen (to cup-tie him) Kane DaSilva Bowen Honeyman Eaves or KLP
Joe Baker & Gerry Hitchins both went to Torino & subsequently other Italian clubs the same time Law did - for princely sums, in '61-'62 time frame. Law came back to Man Utd in '68. The 3x 40,000 we paid for Wagstaff, Houghton & Butler were exceptional fees for a 3rd Div club to shell out. We had ambition in those days.
First of all I meant to put British record transfer fee for Law, there was a higher one for a player to Milan. Don’t know too many round that time but Mullery went Fulham to Spurs for £80,000 at the start of the following year.. Alan Ball was bought by Everton in 1966 for £112,000 and Mick Jones by Leeds in 1967 for £100,000. So our outlay of £120,000 was a big one for a 3rd division club at the time.
Law came back in 1962, he only spent a year in Italy. Saw Hitchens play against Bridlington Trinity in an FA Cup qualifier for Worcester City in 1969. As a Brid Town fan had to force myself to go along to it. Knew a Trinity player who couldn’t believe the opulence of the facilities, changing room complete with marble baths, at Worcester when they went there for the replay which they lost. Good performances considering the gap in leagues between them at the time.
