I did feel a little bad defending our bloated civil service, but as you say a civil service which is not politically neutral (at least in principal) is more than a bit scary.

Just upset quite a few colleagues this morning......as you all know Honda is shutting in July 2021(I think it will be earlier) and we are all being made redundant.
I know for a fact quite a few people voted for Boris after he said he planned to change the 40% tax bracket from £50,000 to £80,000 so this meant we would all pay £6,000 less in tax at the end.
I told them it would never happen ....and low and behold it’s been confirmed that tax change isn’t happening.
Lie no1 and he’s only been in a couple of days.

Tommy Robinson aka Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who was prevented from joining UKIP because of his links with far-right racist organisations, has...

    ...joined the Conservative Party.

I would put money on him being booted out, as the new Tory, 'Project Blue Benevolence' starts rolling out in the New Year.

So is anyone optimistic that Boris with a large majority will lead a more moderate, compassionate one-(divided)-nation Conservative government than might have been the case had he been in hoc to the ERG?

Or does the prospect of 5 years under an Old Etonian chancer with a record of using casually racist rhetoric not offer even that grain of cold comfort?

I am presuming this is Swindon? The Universal Credit must be good down there if they may have to pay 40% tax after they've been made redundant.

After the election and footy results the only comfort I get is the warm embrace of a single malt.

To be perfectly honest Archers, I am more than sceptical that we will get a liberal Boris led government. The disadvantage we are at is that Boris is a compulsive liar, so how would anyone know what he really intends? We know he is able to throw out racist comments, but is that the real Boris?

My guess will be that he is so far in with the nasty element of his party that he is beholden to them and any move to improve the lives of people the ERG hold in utter contempt is likely to split the Tory party, yet again. I can't see anything other than a hard right wing government that will do what the Conservatives have always done, and that is to pay lip service to the less fortunate and vulnerable in our society.

I know that sounds terribly negative but I do feel terribly negative at the moment, and also fearful for what I suspect is to come.

All I keep thinking is how could so many people be so absolutely ****ing stupid?

I suggested to the lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov that we should go as foot passengers on the ferry to France and then catch a train as far away from the coast as we can get and on the way dispose of every form of identification we have and when we get off the train claim political asylum. We could make a good case. We are escaping an ultra right wing regime intent upon putting our lives at risk and driving us to an early grave.

Brilliant idea St Godders. It is likely you will find yourselves in a sea of UK migrants all doing the same.

Have you seen how quickly the Tories have turned on the media? Blaming the BBC etc for the “extensive coverage” of a four-year-old boy with suspected pneumonia forced to sleep on a hospital floor. You couldn't make it up. If this is already happening on only day three of their tenure it doesn't bode well for press freedom from here on in.

First £30,000 of redundancy is tax free, the remainder is taxed at your current rate of taxation as income I believe.

Been waiting 3 years now for my company to finally say goodbye to me....we know 100% it is happening, (the US parent company is closing us down and shrunk us down from over 600 staff to just 40 now) but they keeping me on atm for operational reasons. Don't think they realise I have bugger all to do and just want out to get on with my life with the money...they think they are doing me a favour!

This attack on our public broadcast comapny must be resisted. I find it hard to believe that a British PM should talk of 'dis-engagement' with the BBC.

It's no easy ride, as the likes of Theresa May, Tony Blair and John Major among others will testify (obviously Maggie just handbagged the interviewer) but it's vital in a democracy that we have a state run media outlet not answerable to advertisers.

Of course, the great British public won't protest because "it won't make any difference" (that favoured Brexiteer mantra which I never understood.)
