I feel in those Northern and Midland towns, the traditional Labour Heartlands as it was, the voters had made up their minds long before the election was called, and no amount of cajoling was going to change their minds.

 

Oh they will Archers, just as soon as they’ve worked out how to manipulate the numbers to look like they have

 

Maybe but my next statement was the killer for Labour.

 

You are all being too pessimistic. IMHO the man to beat Boris next time is already out there. It's Dan Jarvis MP for Barnsley. A 47 year old ex Para. I'm not a military enthusiast myself and would align myself with CND ( Although acknowledging that is an electoral liability) we need to accept the need to compromise in all departments. Wherever in the Labour Party the next leader is positioned it will be better than having Pfeffel.

The reason I am optimistic is that I think that there may be trouble ahead for this administration. I think we are heading for a border poll in NI after the DUP lost their majority to the Nationalists, the SNP are going to be a pain in Pfeffel's arse and Brexit is going to present us with a procession of unknown unknowns many of which are not going to be easily solved. Brexit is a Catch22 with business wanting different solutions from the ERG, it's not going to end in harmony. Good Vibrations it isn't !

 

IMO, Johnson will go for a Brexit that will try to minimise the damage to business. He used the ERG to propel himself into No 10 and won the election. There might be what 70 to 80 hardcore ERG members who might still oppose Johnson´s deal but he will have his henchmen to quieten that sector as the mantra is "Let´s Get Brexit done" so he will not endure any opposition to his deal on his side of the house. As for the opposition parties, the election result has neutralised them.

As for NI, it is good to see Pro-Remain parties in the ascendancy so that will help Johnson draw a line down the middle of the Irish Sea.

 

Overall I think that the next five years isn't going to be as bad as it appeared at first sight.

 

This morning radio 5 is taking the piss out of "let's get this done". Why weren't they doing this a month ago?

 

Strewth Fatso you truly are a cynic aren't you? Mind you in truth all governments do............If he gets half of what the tories said they're going to improve it will be in the right direction. I am still concerned for the less well off. I keep seeing the adverts on TV to support unfortunate children in other countries. I keep asking myself why aren't we running something similar for our own children in this country. I agree though our need may not be as great as in other countries........ Is that being too cynical perhaps?. We cant help other countries if we cant help our own.........or is that being too cynical too??

 

You want us to get our own children out of poverty using Children in Need and the National Lottery?

I think that has actually been this governments policy for a while

Perhaps BBC could run a fund raising event called children in need that could raise millions for the UK and worldwide.

If we want to remove the children in this country from poverty we need a government for all people, not just for big business and the the elite. The chance for that has gone. The people of this country have voted to leave Europe in favour of a more equal society with a fairer distribution of wealth.

Obviously coming out of Europe is far more important than anything else. Never mind the poor and needy, the ill, the elderly or the homeless. They don't matter in this country these days.

We can all rally round the flag and sing Jerusalem to make us all feel proud to be English.

That should help.

Hillary Benn is a good shout. I love Starmer but there’s something not quite convincing in the delivery.

 

They are both being sarcastic, Beddy. Charity should never be enough when we could help institutionally. The Victorians relied on charity. How did that go?

 

It's disgusting that level of charitable support is required this day and age. There's lottery funds, likes of Oxfam, various cancer research and mental health charities a huge list. What more would you propose?

 

Thats the point.......I want our government to do more and not rely on charities to make up the short fall

 

Hilary Benn would be my choice too. Starmer has an aggressive edge to him at times that is quite off-putting.
