It's 7 subs in the Cup, but the Championship has the 5 sub rule in league games as well. Really annoys our manager and fans as it reduces our ability to use the squad, but very importantly stops us blooding the youngsters. It also stops us enjoying Portsmouth's inability to fill a subs bench, but that's another story and probably vindictive<devil>

I hadn't realised the 5 sub rule was in the championship as well, some clubs will benifit by the ruling particularly the poorly supported clubs in the lower divisions. But for other clubs like the Saints and PNE it does give the manager a headache and as you correctly point out limits the opportunities the young players would have if 7 subs were allowed.

I like your little reference to Portsmouth...<laugh>...I reckon it was their fans who bombed the Dell during WW2...<laugh>...Must have been great sharing their ground even if they were war time games...<laugh>

For PNE fans, it might well be worth knowing that this time last year Southampton were in 22nd place in Div 1, just shows how quickly things can turn around.
For Southampton fans it must be giving you all a great feeling knowing that this is is the best start to a season Southampton have had in 103 years..<ok>

Record of the two clubs meeting:
This is their first meeting in the League Cup.
The last time they met was in the Championship in the 2008-09 season, when Southampton did the double over North End.
This will be the 41st meeting between the sides. Both teams have won 14 times each, with 13 draws.

Blimey not only is this a Carling Cup tie, but the decider of which of the two clubs has the best record playing against each other...<laugh>

Oh! dear PNE have a miserable record playing in this competition.

    :)

As I've already said somewhere else on this forum, I've experienced every emotion supporting Saints but this is the first time I've felt smug. Attractive or not I intend to enjoy this feeling whilst it lasts. Incidently, though some with better memories may correct me, Saints don't do well in this competition either.

    See what you mean:

The Saints have not reached the fourth round of the League Cup for seven years.
They were last eliminated by a lower league club in September 2008, when League Two side Rotherham registered a 3-1 victory in the third round.

Could this game end in a penalty shootout..<laugh>..could do because on past results neither club can raise a head of steam in this competition..<laugh>.

I think Southampton will be lucky to get away with a clean sheet, we have been conceding quite a few; fortunately the goals are flying in at the other end :).

Adkins (on OS) is talking about Schneiderlin and Chaplow and giving youngsters experience. I wonder if a youngster will start or just be on the bench. It is a chance to get in last 16 so expect him to have some main players on bench.

Whilst I agree we haven't done that well in recent years, didn't we get to the final of this thing decades a go, and lost to Forest in the final. Have a feeling that it wasn't televised for some reason. Or am I just getting senile?

    (Cue, unnecessary comment from Beddy...)

i expect a couple be on the bench similar to the last round - although we may be lucky and get treated to a 90min game from a youngster **cough james ward-prowse cough**

Think NA will go for: Bialkowski, Richardson, Martin, Hooiveld, Reeves, De Ridder, Chaplow, Schneiderlin, Holmes, Guly, Forte. SUBS: Davis, Fonte, Dean, Cork, Lallana, Lambert, Hoskins.

I'd love to see this team, I have a feeling Adkins will go for at least one of either Lambert, Lallana or Fonte. I'm excited to see if Hoskins actually gets a proper go this time!

The Dell. But when full and rocking, St Marys can be spine-tingling. It will be in April this year against those dirty skate b@stards! (sorry)

Yep, a 30 yard speculative effort, which apparently squirmed under the Shrewsbury keeper's body.
