  1. I'm only 19, so i was only around 5/6 when when beat Barcelona 3-2 and beat Man utd 5-0, so i can't really remember it. I didn't go to either match, because at that age i didn't really take it that seriously.

    I asked my dad -

"The 5-1 and the 4-4 games were amazing, but how do they compare to the 5-0 and 3-2 ".

And he said, the 3-2 vs Barcelona was the most amazing NUFC game he's even been to. The noise and atmosphere was incredible, and it was better than the 5-0, even though the 5-0 was amazing.

He said, imagine the reaction of all the toon fans to the Cheick Tiote equalizer, and times that by 10, and you'll maybe get the feeling of the 3-2 win vs Barcelona.

    Is this right?

My dad was a steward at both the 5-0 and the 3-2 wins.

I just want to know if it was really that good?

I don't think it takes a genius to work out that it WAS that good, yes.

  3. I just can't imagine it feeling 10x better than when Cheick Tiote scored that equalizer.

It was good but don't forget the seating only now restrict 80% of atmosphere of old games where everybody chanted most of game rather than at goals.

Wasn't at either game meself, but from other games I did go to before the expansion i'd say the atmosphere back then was better in general

I was at the Barcelona game and i have to say it was the best game I've ever been to and probs will ever go to.
Absolutely amazing game and the atmosphere was incredible through the whole game. Good times.
Makes me sad thinking about that now as we are soooo far away from having that again.

I wouldn't take your dad that literally Tash, as he exaggerated for emphasis.

The 3-2 win over Barcelona was one of the first games I ever went to because of living in Germany at the time! Such a great memory!

United game was one of my fondest memories though, hence the username! Miss them days :(

The 3-2 win vs Barca and the 5-0 destruction of Man Utd were simply amazing matches and I'd put them above the 4-4 comeback vs Arsenal.

I'd also put the euphoria of Bellamy's late winner vs Feyenoord above the 4-4 against Arsenal as well.

Of the ones you've mentioned, I'll go with this order -

4-4 - That comeback was truly unexpected and showed real commitment that we could all be proud of, when that goal went in the atmosphere was unreal. My normally placid father even had a tear in his eye and I always thought he was made of stone!
5-0 - Revenge is so very, very sweet.
3-2 - This game announced our arrival on the big stage, shame it was short lived. It is worth noting however that Barca weren't the force they are now, in fact they finished bottom of the group I think.
5-1 - What a day this was, it is only beaten by the others as we're kind of used to beating them and the 1-4 wasn't that long ago. It was still a great feeling tho, especially considering the way their fans were larging it in the build up and the fact we'd just come up.

7-1 vs Leicester is still my favourite mind :D

We should really be back there. Someone show these videos to Ashley. It might give him the inspirational kick up the arse he needs to splash some cash.

5-0 was the biggest one in my opinion but seperating that and "Tino night" is virtually impossible. They were amazing nights. Barca was like a recognition in Europe that we were not there to make up the numbers. 5-0 against Man U was ust unheard, they were visibly shaken that night and Fergie was gobsmacked. I think someone has raised a very salient point though when trying to compare it to now. All seater stadiums have completely changed the atmosphere in grounds. Not being funny but the atmosphere then was a different class to now. You might have only had 36,000 but it was a lot noiser than the 52,000 seated folk you have now.

I'll throw one out there for those who never missed a game in those days, 4-2 v Sheff Wed with Alex Mathies flying volley. No where near the magnitude of the 5-0 or 3-2 but the atmosphere was every bit as electric that night. It was pissing down and I think we all just wanted to keep warm and ignore the rain. You also had Waddler back (looking absolute ****ing class) which was a big thing to us who had grown up watching him. It was a hell of a game and Andy Sinton, a geordie lad, got both for them. And cult hero despite his short shelf life, Malcolm Allen bagged late on.

To be honest I wish some of you lads who travel all over watching us now could be given just a taste of what we were blessed with then. When you had all the standing sections packed with one and all jumping up and down singing, it was special. Real good atmosphere to it to, if someone went down people were very quick to help and ensure no one got hurt. Even the most hairy arsed blokes were good to younger ones, allowing them better views etc. Mind there was the odd one who'd relieve themselves down the front!
