My gut instinct is that Jose is being driven by a degree of PL "I'll show you ..." . To take the current Spurs setup to a PL/CL trophy is his modern day Porto.
Exactly what I think...he wants to prove a point Usually succeeds in doing that rightly or wrongly but he always proves his point. Spurs fans need to embrace Jose...let him know he’s one of us because everyone is wanting him to fail and don’t he know it. Let him know we are behind him and I think he can bring the Club what it craves.
The guy is a genius. Difference between him and Ole is that Jose won things with that team and got second spot. Ole never will. We're a much better team than United. If Jose can do it with United, he can certainly do it with us.
This is where 'Hopeful Brian' sees the appointment of Mourinho. I imagine that it's why Levy appointed him. We have some excellent players. The front 4 are top drawer. Behind them is a bit more suspect but there are lots of good players for Mourinho to work with and create a working model. Last season we didn't play well at all but for half the season we kept pace with the league winners. After that, something went very badly wrong, although not wrong enough to stop us reaching the CL Final. Good players don't become bad ones over night and there's definitely been a mental/confidence element to that. That can be rectified as was shown on Tuesday night - with the right set up and some belief, the game was turned on its head. Luke points out that Mourinho bought some duff players at United and he did. However, he came into a club that was desperate to replace a large percentage of the squad and that makes for the odd desperate act. We need 4 or 5 players but there's a lot more quality here already. Also, buying effective defenders is a lot easier than buying a centre forward to get you 20+ goals a season. We have the talent to win games, what we need are defensive players to make sure it happens. If Mourinho has one strength, this is it. So the early signs are hopeful. The bloke actually looks happy to be here, which he never did at United. He's brought a new strategist with him, who has done excellent things at Monaco and then Lille. He's gone for the Son Kane Lucas front 3, with Dele in support, which looks like his first and best Chelsea team. That line-up means that we've gone out to win games, rather than try not to lose them. As far as anyone can judge, the players seem happy and are responding to their new boss. The clincher would be if we could get the DoF from Lille, to get our recruitment right. That would cure a lot of ills on both sides of our management.....a few quid to spend wouldn't harm anything, either Sure it will all go tits up eventually and when it does, it'll be messy.....but so far, I'm hopeful that things will improve in the short term and that if he's got his head on straight, this might just work for a while. A long way to go yet for any real confidence though.......
Why are people worrying about it going wrong? It always goes wrong eventually. Settling for Poch was settling for the very same thing that we criticised Wenger for. We, as fans, need to adjust our thinking and not only demand success, but expect it.
Because with Mourinho, it ends the same way after 2-3 years Expensive fallout with disgruntled players and a squad in disarray
The mental gymnastics have already started regarding Lo Celso, with some of the Twitter crowd thinking that Lo Celso isn't in Steptonho's plans so he's not played so far, which is great for Levy as he saves £40m Yeah, about that obligation to buy clause for any form of European qualification...
I wouldn't disagree with this but there's also the short term consideration of whether Harry Kane, Son and our other top talents would stay for a 'project manager' who started a major rebuild taking a couple of seasons? They all seem impressed by his appointment and are (verbally at least) rallying round the flag of someone who has won trophies. In short order it has brought a positive reaction. Harry Kane has dismissed talk of a move, as he sees Mourinho as someone who can deliver silverware. That has to be a good thing. I'm sure Daniel Levy weighed up his problems and benefits and thought he was worth a shot. Like you, I'm sceptical but it's too late for cold feet now. I went on Tuesday night and I'll probably go on Saturday because there's hope that we can turn the season around and the team really needs positive input, as their confidence is so wafer thin. So, I'll sit on my fears and try to embrace his tenure....What else is there?
I was against hiring Mourinho, but that's water under the bridge. While I still would have hired someone else, I'm encouraged by the logical approach he's taken so far (a tendency to make bizarre decisions beimg Pochettino's weakness) and can respect the reasoning behind hiring him. As good as Pochettino was in so many ways, he couldn't get the team over the last hurdle. So why not hire someone whose specialty is exactly that? Seems like it's worth a shot.
Only stupid people buy into the media hype (positive or negative) surrounding Mourinho. His reputation for “parking the bus” was earned whilst gaining success for teams that couldn’t compete by using free flowing flair as their primary tactic. Yet, when Mourhino has had teams that can play that way, he can be as attack-minded as any manager out there. Already, we are witnessing this. And regarding the accusation that he destroys clubs and leaves them in turmoil, that’s clear bollocks. Take United, as a prime example, it was the players that brought that club down, and Mourinho was the scapegoat, it being cheaper for the club to sack him than the likes of Sanchez and Pogba.
I wouldn't go that far. Porto had a wobble, finished second and then went back to winning everything. Chelsea replaced him with Avram Grant and still finished 2nd in everything. Inter won their domestic cup, World Club Cup and sacked Rafa, then see-sawed for years. Real won multiple Champions Leagues. I see it like Redknapp's time at the helm, but with a manager more likely to win some silverware. He should be listened to and given the correct tools for the job, but the overall vision of the club shouldn't be compromised. Don't let him near the money and plan for a time when he'll no longer be the manager.
Fair points but surely he will have been given assurances that he’ll be allowed to make signings and sell players etc
In much the same way as Pochettino was, I'd have thought. He should be able to make recommendations and shouldn't have to accept players that he doesn't want. We shouldn't start signing players that don't fit the club's overall strategy, though. He shouldn't expect us to, either.
Shock......Horror......Incredulity......a good piece of proper journalism in The Mirror. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/jose-mourinhos-tactical-blueprint-tottenham-20990293 I can't argue with much of that. He's inherited a group of players, most of whom he would have bought if he had the chance. If Mourinho's head's on straight, he's got most of what he needs to build a great team with plenty of quality in the squad to cover injuries and loss of form. If he can't make this work, he's done.
This The issue that needs to be answered is what happens with the want away players. They did for Poch. He needs to sort them out - get rid and replace quickly and adequately or get them back on board.
Did they do for him? To my mind, only a couple of them were a problem before the manager started to unravel. Toby's been a contract rebel for a while and he was one of our best players last season. I reckon that he'll improve again whether he stays or goes; Jan Vertonghen has regularly said he wants to stay and was excellent last season; Eriksen's form dropped off a cliff last season and that was a problem because we had to keep on picking him. With Lo Celso and a rejuvenated Dele, we can stick him in the stands, if he doesn't perk up. He doesn't need to be a problem; Rose just wants shooting and if we get in a left back in January, we can do just that.
Jose Mourinho was offered £12m by Real Madrid to not take another managerial job and wait for Zinedine Zidane to be sacked before he joined Tottenham.
