But the downside is that he may get closer and closer to the transfer window and want to hang on to see what other clubs are interested before signing anything. Getting him tied down now will guarentee top money for him when he goes.

I agree with you if i'm honest haha I just thought I'd give the other side to it!

I'm not being silly. I'm being sensible from a business perspective.

I'm looking at the club living within its means for a secure future and than will not happen if the players wages are allowed to escalate. You increase one players wages and the rest want to re-negotiate their contracts. The wage cap is in place for one specific reason; to ensure that inflated wages such as Owen et all does not happen again.

Say Tiote is told he can have you're proposed £70 k per week yet Barton has been told he's going to have a pay cut to £50k per week. Barton will be miffed to say the least. To stop that happening the club then say Barton can have £70 per week. Enrique questions why his performances are not rewarded so well and re-negotiates to £55k per week. Willo thinks he's worth more and ups his wages leaving Simpson and Taylor to open discussions saying they want parity.

Bye bye wage cap and that then resorts to less revenue spent throughout the remainder of the club unless the management look to the one area they can increase revenue stream.

Your season ticket price goes up.. and up...and up to cover the increase in wages. That could be used in youth team development, player acquisitions etc.

12 months later there is more reviewing in the squad as increased wages are demanded. New players coming in want parity as they know the club pays.

You see the embroiling turmoil that increasing wages causes. Wage caps are responsible and sensible and when you see that several clubs have 55% to 60% of all turnover is spent on wages you see that it is utterly unsustainable.

If you opt to take extra from one division of the club that added extra has to come from elsewhere.

I think we should renew his contract when the end of the season draws nearer and offer him the highest wage packet. That way, he knows how much money he can earn for the next 5 years by staying here, and the element of earning more elsewhere will be much less appealing.

It's the best course of action we can take to make it more likely that he'll want to stay here.

We signed Tiote for 3.5 mil and he signed a 4 year deal on around 20k a week. Now i don't mind players sold if the offer just cant be rejected like the Carroll bid, but the quoted 15 mil for Tiote is a disgrace, i don't care if Ashley see's it as 11.5 mil profit, if Chelsea paid 24 million for Michael Essien then we should demanding at least 30 for Mr T in todays climate!

Manchester United are considering a move for Newcastle United battler Cheik Tiote. The Ivory Coast midfielder has been in impressive form for the Magpies since his move to St James’ Park in the summer and his stunning leveller, and all round performance, against Arsenal has left Sir Alex Ferguson planning a bid to bring the midfield battler to Old Trafford.

24 year old Tiote has been a driving force in the Newastle midfield and his displays as a midfield enforcer have not gone unnoticed and as well as interest from Man United, Chelsea are also said to be keen on the former FC Twente man and some reports suggest that Carlo Ancelotti made an enquiry about the player last month.

I agree with Tash's sentiment, but not the 70k wages...

Am I wrong in thinking that when a player signs a long term contract, his price goes up? Simple supply and demand...

If Tiote is on a 5 year contract, then that gives us at least 3 more years (IF we keep hold of him) before we realistically need to start considering bids. If he is only on a 3 year contract (with 2 years left) we'd have to think about selling earlier in order to get money for him and prevent him leaving on a free!

It puts us in a stronger negotiating position and allows us to bump up the price. So Tash is spot on in this respect!!!

However, as for the wages, OT has it spot on, Tash, wage caps are stupidly important when repairing the damage done by over-zealous pay cheques and I'm pleased we brought one in!
