    Nothing new,
theres usually a bad spelling mistake in most articles no matter who writes it,
I see bad spelling on here and other forums all the time and readily admit doing it myself but we are not professional journalists are we and they should be doing a better job or at least using a spell checker.

The HDM recently had, on the same page, mention of reefs at the Cenotaph and an accident where a cyclist hit a curb. Spell checkers don’t work when although a word is wrong for the context it is being used in if it is spelled correctly. Wouldn’t mind proof reading for them on a piece work basis. Would be a nice little earner.

The sub-editing at the HDM is centralised now, meaning that no one with any local knowledge will be editing these articles. Captions, headlines, standfirsts and the like will have nothing to do with the journalists and will be entirely generated by some minimum wage lackey in god knows where. Most local papers have taken this route to minimise their losses. It's sad and leads to a huge drop in quality - the local Brighton paper does similar, and a recent article in it had Brighton spelled as 'Brighten' throughout - but it's understandable. Historically, Phil Buckingham is as good as we've had at the HDM for City - only Danny Fullbrook comes close - and from what I see throughout the country in local media, we're better served than we maybe think we are. Honest!

I agree Phil Buckingham is great. But most spellcheckers have the option to add words to their dictionaries - even proper names. Also, the information that it was Chris Chilton/ern must have come from somewhere. Either it's been moronically changed from Chilton, or it was wrong in the archive. Whichever, it's pretty poor -- centralised subbing (or no subbing). Actually, I enjoy reading the online stuff from the HDM. Still a terrible error, though.

Gone downhill since the local papers were taken over by the Trinity Mirror Group from the group that owned the Daily Mail.

Danny Fullbrook to me was the best since David Bond. We have been ill served at City. Whilst the rugby teams have had people who were interested in the game to the point of being like PR agents such as Richard Tingle we had disinterested, incompetent clowns like Fieldhouse. I saw that the absolutely useless James Shields topped a poll in Sheffield for the worst football reporter they have ever had.

I would fancy that side to be pushing for at least a play off place this season.

Phil Buckingham is sorting it, or has sorted it. An old photo caption and the mistake wasn’t originally sorted.

Fieldhouse was awful, in fact 'doing a Fieldhouse' became the new description for a cock up in the fanzines at the time. He was a key factor in the demise of the Sports Mail IMO because his reports were not worth buying the paper for.

Always remember him writing that City were considering playing a 4-4-3 formation.

Well ! If people really want to take any notice of a paper where one of its headlines is of a woman who is disgusted about a Amazon delivery that has apparently ruined Xmas in the middle of November I despair !:headbang:

It wasn’t taking notice of it, it was the sheer hopelessness of their reporter and the paper for not noticing it. Presumably you think people should either take everything in the HDM at face value or take absolutely no notice of it, which negates the point of reading it. Mind you I despair that a City fan doesn’t notice what was ridiculous about the statement. Unless Fatty thought they were going to play without a goalkeeper.

Is that a statement of your attitude? Or advice to me? Commas, or the lack of them alter the meaning of sentences so much.

Having our club disrespected by the local media by appointing hopeless oafs to report on the club whilst rugby league had people acting like PR agents for the clubs and the game wasn’t a trivial matter. It affected the way the club was perceived and potential support.
