Successful flood prevention due to rainfall is all common sense and joined up thinking - areas to hold/store/cope with a sudden amount of large rain such as flood plains, lagoons, forests etc and infrastructure to get it away from build up areas as fast as possible. We're doing a tiny bit better at the first, although not great as it doesn't help when we build on flood plains. We do terrible at the second - having seen the size of the drains and drain pipes in other countries, we could do a hell of a lot better here, but that would cost money. The 2007 floods were definitely worse than they needed to be due to the pumps not working (back up pumps had been serviced with water-soluble grease, so when they got wet themselves, they seized up as the grease was washed away - couldn't make it up...). I remember the water lapping round my front door step on that day while I frantically moved furniture upstairs, and then about 5pm, it suddenly went away. I said at the time it was like someone somewhere pulled a plug from the bath, but I found out afterwards it coincided with a pump somewhere finally coming online. We're a clever, innovative nation; we could do a hell of a lot better at this (and other key infrastructure) if the will was there. Unfortunately, I don't think it's high on anyone's agenda for Dec 12th - better stop there before I stray into a banned topic.
It's shocking out tonight, there's over a foot of standing water on much of the A63, two or three feet in some places, the road through Ferriby's shut, as is the road through Northcliffe/Southclife.
I do t know why houses in Hull aren’t built raised up actually Not stilts but surely a few extra courses before floor level would help?
Not on the scale you mention, but new builds have to be built with the floors higher than previously to allow for potential flooding.
Quite a few houses in South Cave are flooded. Beverley Road/Little Wold Lane area. Some on West End as well. A right pisser.

nah, these are ‘normal’ houses with a waterproof cellar built in effectively a dry dock, so they float when it floods. Very clever.
