This quote from Peter Oborne's piece in The Grauniad explains a hell of a lot... A big reason for Johnson’s easy ride is partisanship from the parts of the media determined to get him elected. I have talked to senior BBC executives, and they tell me they personally think it’s wrong to expose lies told by a British prime minister because it undermines trust in British politics. Is that a reason for giving Johnson free rein to make any false claim he wants?
As we had no business being there in the first place, I would think not. I guess the ideal system for them is a completely independent one, free of all colonial powers.

I wouldn't be surprised if they knew damn well that the electoral watchdog wouldn't touch them as the rules are so archaic that they were last updated when Friends Reunited was the only social media site anyone actually used, giving them a loophole to outright lie to the public and then deploy Dominic Raab to say nobody gives a toss that they blatantly lied to the public yet aren't held to account in a way that members of the public clearly are
