My understanding was that SJP couldn't be extended as the buildings surrounding the East Stand were protected. This decision will just confirm that there will be no extension to the South stand either.
The new Mexican owners may want to build a new stadium in the shape of a giant sombrero which needs much more room at the ends.
they would probably prefer a new stadium altogether in 10 years time . why are people talking about heritage and iconic views ? it's only been like that for ****ing 25 years the idiots
What has that got to do with anything? We were talking about location - unlikely that if we needed to expand now we could stay in that location. I love that you can see the stadium from miles away and it’s part of the city skyline - not tucked away on some industrial estate.
who gives a **** about the view ! it's only been a view for a short period of time , so I'm saying the heritage arguments a fallacy
That’s probably what the Greeks said about the Parthenon 10years after they finished it. Using your argument I cant admire the view of The Shard because its not been there long enough.
I do and surely anyone with a bit of soul approaching the city from Gateshead across the Tyne Bridge. Still progress is progress.
it's only been the view for 25 years and there'd much better things to look at. People will get jobs that can feed their families, so sorry ,but I'm with the council that's more important than your view from a bridge
You asked who gave a **** about the view you didn't ask if we thought the view was enough reason to bin off the development. How long the view has been there is irrelevant.
If they decide on a whole new stadium then so be it, I find the arguments for constant expansion are usually short sighted. At the end of the day a plot can only have so much within it. But, I can understand the view that it being removed will damage the city and its heritage. I think you out and out dismissing that is a little ignorant.
how's that? it's only been visible for 25 years in the cities history is my point and as much as enjoy the football there's more important things you could look at coming across a bridge .. for example the road
Fair enough I'm just trying to say I understand where some people will come from. But the fundamental point your trying to make I agree 100%. At the end of the day, you tell me flattening St James' or Anfield or whatever stadium would improve the conditions of the people living there. Then sorry, bye bye. It's a sport stadium.
Thing is, the current ground was extended from 30000 to the current 52500 and until this season was being all but filled despite little to cheer on the pitch. In future with hopefully a new and better owner and a growing population further extension will be needed as shown at other PL clubs. Taking away that possibility would be disastrous for the fans. I have no problem with the land being built on in general, I want to see our city improving and tbh can live with not being able to see the ground from a distance. It’s still got a brilliant city centre location. I just don’t think it would be rocket science to build there leaving space for stadium expansion and believe the council should and could have insisted on that.
Consider the cost of expanding the gallowgate and the number of new seats that would be gained. That would be a very expensive build for what, 5k seats? Probably why it's never been done before.
