There's a big difference in the ref correcting himself and having another ref correct him. The first scenario is a possibility, the second (as evidence shows) is not. Still not an ideal situation though.
They are overturning refs decisions now .The only problem is no one is convinced that when they have done it they ended up with correct decision.
watford got given a penalty for Delafelou(sp) doing exactly the same as Mane - originally no pen & yellow card. There were a couple of others as well i think its just that one stuck in my mind as that incident , Manes & Sons for spurs against were all pretty much the same over a couple of weekends i.e. some contact attacker takes a step then collapses yet we ended up with Mane - no pen ,booked Son - no pen , no action Delafeau (sp) Pen Edit - Just remembered Zaha booked for diving which VAR overturned .
Agree with you completely here, I thought var was brought in to deal with the howlers that refs make, not judge whether someone is an eighth of a millimetre offside or not, or whether the tongue of someone boot may have grazed a sock. Most games shouldn't be mentioning var at all, it's the compketletly zack handed approach that has caused the **** show, not the actual technology
VAR gave a penalty for Brighton vs us the other week, that the ref didn’t give, the first penalty awarded by VAR in the PL. They’ve now admitted it was an incorrect VAR decision. Cheers PGMOL.
Without reading any official rule book, wasn't a close offside decision to be made to the benefit of the attacker? Or is that some unofficial yard stick to base judgement on?
Total agreement. Okay, the hyperbole over Atkinson aside, I dont think people consciously go out to make wrong decisions, but they are going the extra yard to defend the on-field decision, right or wrong. I was impressed with the decision on Mane at Porto: I thought he was two yards off to the naked eye. I grudgingly accept the decision against Mane at OT - that would have stood last season, as did the decision not to award a penalty against Young the season before that. Swings and roundabouts. But the decisions against Bobby last week when he moved the line after it initially showed him onside, and the one last night against Sheffield United ( surely the defender's head was playing his big toe on?) Shows that the benefit of doubt is not going to the attacker. The one thing we thought was right about the system was offside - it seemed to work well in the women's WC. But now it's being used every game - well maybe there isnt enough good technicians and refs to go around. Whod have thought?
Indeed, that was a shocker. Didnt even need VAR - I was driving at the time, and the 5Live commentary team to a man just went ballistic. That was simply watching the same VAR replays as the ref in the control centre. In fact, one of the team announced ' No they won't give a pen for that - minimal contact, total accidental and he wasnt even ven looking at him - the ball was on it's way out and the Brighton player just flung himself to the floor '. Then they gave it.. But handballs that the ref misses , like Ali last week - he jumped with his ****ing hand in the air - if the ref sees that it's a pen. But what ****e did the come up with? He was under pressure competing for the ball? Wtf?
I was listening to the same commentary, couldn’t believe it when I actually viewed it. Truly awful decision. So now they admit it was wrong and the player therefore over egged the contact and dived to con the referee, so where’s the retrospective 3 match ban? It seems that rule only applies to Oumar Niasse. As for the handball last week, they literally made up a rule to justify that decision. Taylor tried his utmost to give Son a penalty at the other end when Son dived after Mina fell over. Took minutes viewing it, then didn’t give it, VAR decision over, comes on the big screen, then oh hang on, I’ll have another look from a different angle to see if I can justify giving it. Manc twat. Then Richarlison gets felled at the other end definitely contact and a foul, VAR check over before you can say ‘bent ****’.
It used to be benefit of doubt goes to the attacker, now Mike Riley's interpretation of VAR is benefit of doubt goes to the official's first decision. Also the benefit of faked evidence goes to them too.
Niasse was the first to get a retrospective red for diving but he isn't the only player to have got it.
I think it is now beyond dispute. When a Toffee comes to the Liverpool board and is in agreement with us that VAR is ****e, it must be ****e!
