What a shame to hear this news. A great man, and a modest man. Our thoughts go out to his family... R.I.P Ginger McCain
Very, very sad to hear this, a true racing legend. Condolences to his family and loved ones. May the McCain name long continue in racing through his son Donald Jr RIP Ginger
Very sad news, albeit not unexpected. Not sure we'll ever see the likes of Ginger again, always spoke his mind with zero respect for political correctness (not a criticism !) and will always be remembered as one of the games characters and I for one think the game could do with a few more. RIP Ginger
A lovely tribute from his son on Racing Post website now: http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-racing/d-mccain-amberleigh-house-red-rum-aintree-legend-ginger-mccain-dies-aged-80/918555/ I met Ginger a few times, albeit very briefly, and he was nothing but polite and genuine. RIP
True Ron. Any man who happened to have a once in a life time horse like Red Rum walk into his yard, is going to leave us as a legend.
Agree with everything said. He wouldn't have been everyone's cup of tea but he was as genuine as the day is long and you always knew he was saying what he thought rather than what he thought he ought to say. A credit to the game of racing and may Donald carry the batton on.
Very sad news...always hilarious watching him being interviewed by Sue Barker and the like on National day, even more unpredictable than Mick Easterby!
Very sad but this is a man who must be celebrated in the horse racing community. Thoughts go out to his family- a true legend, R.I.P
Red Rum was some horse though, 5 times he ran in the National, 3 wins and 2 seconds, and never fell. That sort of Grand National record will never be matched. Every year people would write Red Rum's chances off, thinking the handicapper had got the better of him, but Red Rum just kept on improving. Back in those days the fences were much higher, so they went alot slower, so the weight wasn't as important as it is these days. Jumping was what counted, and Red Rum was arguably the best jumper in history. I've never seen a horse jump aswell around Aintree. These days the fences at Aintree might aswell be hurdles, compared with what Red Rum was jumping. So the race is run alot faster, therefore the top weight has very little chance of winning, as the race is more of a stamina test, rather than a test of jumping
I was lucky enough (many moons ago) to see Red Rum up close in the flesh. What a handsome horse he was, not big, but with the heart of a lion. Also got to see Amberleigh House enjoying his retirement at the National Stud last year.
RIP Ginger, a true original. Great trainer, great man. Rude bugger sometimes, but a all heart really.
