How many managers did short appoint you were unhappy with? Ironically though de fanti is despised, that season saw some of safcs best results in the premier era and a cup final

Did a bit graft in his flat when he was staying in Sunderland. Had his signature embossed on his wallpaper in the passageway.

I'm not talking about managers, I specifically don't bring up managers when discussing Short because I was happy with most of them and most did what we needed in terms of getting results to keep us up. I'm obviously referring to the people above the manager, the ones who make the key footballing decisions for the owner and also those he trusted to run his business (because he generally wasn't involved day to day). He got those appointments badly wrong and it meant the managers often didn't have much chance, like I say had he got it right and got someone anywhere near as competent as Levy we'd have been absolutely fine

He gave that to Niall Quinn, who gambled and won just with sbragia, then brought in Bruce who spent more than in safcs history. Then we had the bent fiasco and the even worse overseeing of gyan leaving outside the prem transfer window.

I know, I'm not arguing that Quinn's period was a resounding success, simply that we had recovered from the 19 point season when we were regularly in the top flight under Short and only not progressing because of some dreadful appointments. Under Short our recruitment was horrendous, as seen by the few players who actually went for a profit, we never really had a "culture" at the club, it was like a new approach every season. That is what held us back, not the 19 point season, the blame for us not really kicking on even when we had a billionaire owner who was happy to spend and in a time before FFP tried to clamp down on it was all on Ellis Short

Imo I don’t think we progressed at all, as during the whole of shorts tenure we were bottom six for 90% of every season

just my opinion that safc have never recovered from the season prior to the 19pt debacle, despite spending close to a billion quid

Anyway excellent debate but I’m concentrating on the snooker for a bit

I'm not sure that he did. I seem to recall that once he had been repaid loans he had made to the club he just about broke even on the sale.
I'm open to clarification mind as I'm just working off memory

Didn't do too bad getting three billionaires interested in investing in a league one club did they? Not to mention the association with Dell who may well be involved as we move up the leagues.

Brought Reid here who built the best team I’ve seen. Class days, built the SoL. Not going to pretend I know to much about him tbh but seems to have our best interests at heart. Nice fella.

I'm not sure of the purchase price myself but if pushed would guess in the region of £8M - £!0M but then again my memory does play tricks

Amazing how nostalgia spreads and obscures the reality of the times.
He was very much on the nose by the time he left and most were glad to see the back of him. Who can forget him agonising about the taps in the executive bogs when matters were far more pressing on the field.
The SOL is a monument to his endeavours but let us not forget that it was mostly built with Grants and handouts, very very little of his own money.
He also picked up a few million when he left for his shares/key to the door. Certainly more than what he paid. Remember he hired Wilkinson, potentially one of the worst appointments we ever made. He also gave Buxton a job, but hey that was then, this is now, all is forgiven

As I said I was working from memory and we all know how that can play tricks on you. I'm sure details will be out there, Google is your friend etc, but I was just being lazy :emoticon-0100-smile

Sir Bob is like an old uncle who bought you a rather expensive present for Christmas. He forever reminds you that he bought it and you daren't break it because he always checks that you still have it and its fit for the purpose he chose.

Always take Bob with a pinch of salt. I wouldn't be surprised if he finds out plenty of rumours given he will always be associated with us, but equally I would say he's unlikely to know more than is already known.

Am not surprised, Bob Murray took.us out of a sadly not fit for purpose Roker Park into a fantastic new stadium fit to last for a century, coupled with superb training facilities . The people who have run the club since he left have gotten us into the 3rd division and not far off bankruptcy. Not what Bob expected.

I don't think he made millions out of SAFC at all, and you have to put the blame on Reid not Murray for what I regard as the start of our downfall. He is the one who undoubtedly made a lot of money by buying overpriced trash from one single agent..
