I was on a plane last week from Frankfurt where they still served meals but I was clearly going to be one of the last to be served - it was either chicken breast or German sausage. I was hoping for the breast but expecting the wurst I’ll get my coat.....
You looking at it too simply; it's strengthening the first team, not necessarily improving the strongest eleven. Always good to have options, another FB could offer something different. Why can't all three be on par and compete for places?
Old Mbappe rumours being recycled by lazy journalists again I see. About time we get linked with Figo and Arda Turan again.
I agree with all of the positions that need to be strengthened. Problem is, Klopp doesn’t like big squads so signing one player in each position is pretty much out of the question. So we need to sign multi functional players that perform in 2 positions minimum. E.g if we sell Lovren, then we buy a player who can play both centre back and right back. It provides cover for Trent, and Joe moves back to centre back. If we’re buying an attacker, we need someone who is comfortable on the flank and can play central? Hopefully we can address 5-6 needs but with only 2-3 players.
Ignoring keepers, I can only think of three players we've bought whilst Klopp as been here that don't fit that; Matip, Robbo and VVD. Most can play more than one position. Completely agree with this approach too. Even Caulker played up front for us
disagree - yes buy for first team whenever possible but pragmatism dictates at times it is sensible to provide cover in "exposed" positions .
When you say first team, do you mean first XI? If so, Alisson, VVD, Trent, Robbo, Fabinho, Mane and Firmino cannot be improved upon imo by practically anyone (many would add Salah here, I think he's replaceable). That leaves Matip, two midfielders and possibly Salah. If you replace Matip, Gomez doesn't get a look in as he'd be 4th pick so he'd want out. I would argue that Lovren/Gomez are already the best 3rd/4th choice CB options from any European team right now. Salah wouldn't settle for a rotation role so he'd want out (he's already been hankering for a move to Real or Juve anyway). Midfield is the only place we can realistically improve imo. I agree with improving the first team and the squad will take care of itself...to a point. When you're first XI is as strong as ours though, that's damn hard to do so you look to improve the supporting cast meaning you can rest the odd player without a major drop in performance. Backups. That's our big weakness.
you are taking an extreme view even though you have already said yourself both Matip & Robbo were bought as cover yet have become first choice by virtue of their performances . To be clear i'm not saying buy any old tosser but we should actively looking to add cover to particularly the FB area which feels dreadfully exposed atm.
