Leasing.com Trophy - Northern Group A - Stadium of Light Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed that he will use tomorrow’s Leasing.com Trophy game with Leicester City Under-21s to run the rule over a number of players that have barely featured during his first month as Sunderland manager. Team News: Having recovered from injury, Alim Ozturk and Laurens de Bock are set to start tomorrow’s game at the Stadium of Light. Dylan McGeouch will line up in midfield, having failed to feature in any of Sunderland’s matches under Parkinson to date, while Benji Kimpioka is set to lead the line in attack. The Black Cats will be guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds of the EFL Trophy if they win tomorrow night, but at this stage of the competition, spreading the load around the squad remains the overriding priority. Sunderland’s run to the final of last season’s Checkatrade Trophy proved something of a double-edged sword, with the club enjoying a memorable day out at Wembley but the extra matches in the second half of the season in particular contributing to a fixture pile-up that ultimately damaged the Black Cats’ hopes of winning promotion. Phil Parkinson: “It’s a night to have a look at a few of the players that haven’t played yet. There are a few different options in the side, it’s still a learning curve for myself and Steve (Parkin) to get to know some of the lads, and this is a good opportunity for us to do that." “We’re taking the game seriously, but it’s an opportunity to look at some of the players that haven’t had much game time so far. Any time any player pulls on a Sunderland shirt, it’s a serious game, but we’ve got to be honest and say that when it comes to our priority list, it’s not at the top.” “You have to be honest and say that at this stage, it can be a low-key competition, but as Sunderland’s experiences last season proved, it can become a very exciting competition once you progress to the later rounds. I’ve always tended to use the competition to get a good look at the whole squad." “In terms of the way that the competition is organised now, I personally think that it’s a good idea to bring Premier League teams’ Under-21s into the tournament. It’s good for the development of those players, Under-21 football can sometimes not be a true reflection of what you’re going to meet in league football, so games like this help with those players"
Hard to know what to think about this game. Whenever we play I want us to win, equally I want us to put in a good show, but if we fail to progress I don't suppose many fans would be too distressed. But winning breeds confidence so I'm going for 2-0 home win.
Not gan not paying £15 train fare then £10 taxi home for what's practically an under 21 game I kna you got a free ticket but just too much hassle there on Saturday though
Will be there with the bairn. Will be even more weird than the usual cup games when just the east stand is open as the free ticket means we have our season card seats so I assume the whole lower bowl will be open. Can't see this being a big attendance at all.
Doubt I will be wandering along... I will check to see if on safcsee... I would play our kids..Kimpokia etc
I'm honestly not bothered. Weather is bad at the moment but thats not my excuse for not attending, reality is I cant get enthused about this competition. Couldn't last season either and never bothered, even with final. Don't know whether its an age thing or not?? Only live 9 miles from SOL and have had season ticket since '88. But lethargy has crept in over last 3 seasons
Not lethargy on my part marra Read my post for not gan tonight Sooner stay at home with 8 cans & watch it on the box
They are top of the group and need just one point to qualify for the next stages. They are also in a very good run of form. I'll go for a close game, 2-1 to the lads.
I'm mainly interested in Kimpioka playing and impressing the boss, other than that of course i want us to win but whatever happens I won't be losing any sleep.
Not going, went on Saturday and couldn't really see so duffing it. Got a ticket for Saturday when hopefully my eye is more clear.
Leicester first team flying under Brendan Rodgers. Will be hard game. I'd use it as a scouting mission for potential loan signings in January.
