I was always a good runner, but only long distance, especially cross country. Sprinting i was like a Sloth with gout.
Won the 1985 Calendar cover design competition at Primary school and followed it up by coming 2nd in the bookmark design competition the following year
Whenever we played rounders or softball I'd Babe Ruth it, straight over the junior schools wall everytime. I was quick in a kart, but never really had the money or the focus to go further. yeah, dedication and focus are probably more important than natural ability when it comes to making it. I had to many distractions outside of karting that outweighed my desire to race, I wasn't going to give up going out, playing paintball or going skiing to have a bit more money to race at a higher level.
I learnt to row at college and was technically quite good at it despite being the wrong size. It really teaches you why the team matters. The boat only moves well if everyone works together.
Played footy at a decent level and had trials with some lower league clubs at the time that came to nothing but without a doubt running was my thing but I didn't love it like footy, would have qualified for Wales at youth level for 1500 metres if I hadn't had 4 cans of Bow before the race.
Played footy to a decent level up until about 18, then got asked by a mate if I fancied a game of rugby on Boxing Day. Got hooked on rugby and ditched football. Also played a decent bit of golf (9 handicap) but now play about once a year if I’m lucky. Last time I went out all the old piss takes such as “all the gear, but no idea” and “does your husband play” were banded about
As a kid I won all the local Judo competitions every year, got dozens of fake gold medals and trophies in a box somewhere. Stopped doing Judo when I moved to the US. I was on the tennis team at my US high school... Worst player on the team, but I was the fastest runner on the tennis team... I've always been a good endurance/distance runner but never competed. I played five aside footy as an adult until the astro-turf buggered my knee. I sucked at it, but had fun.
