Sounds like he did them a favour, gave them a reason to sack him and get him off the wage bill. It seems rather unfair only sacking him when the other 2 were more involved with the driving.
They're basically just trying to avoid paying him his wages, while he's out with a self-inflicted injury, which I see little issue with. He's been given the option to stay on reduced terms should he wish.
I presume his pride got in the way, because now he's got to manage his own recovery from injury, which must be incredibly difficult without a team's medical facilities, physios, therapists, psychologists, team mates etc to hand. While I have no problem with how he has been dealt with, I am disappointed that the other two are back and playing for the team, given they were the ones actually driving and even legged it from he scene. Presumably Derby's standards and expectations are flexible when it comes to players who are match fit. I could see in that situation how Keogh would tell them to get stuffed.
Maybe the Derby County management know more about what went on that night, what Keogh's role was and who was actually to blame, than some blokes on a City message board.
You may be right, however when the two drivers commit a criminal offence, are brought before the court, and Keogh isn't, it smacks of double standards. The club statement is also hugely contradictory!
getting into the back of a drunk drivers car should not equal more punishment than the actual driver it's ridiculous but the two drivers offer derby more they can be sold on etc disgraceful punished for the drivers actions but they get off scott free cause derby can make a profit no one ever can say derby cares about ethics they kept not one but two drunk drivers on who were that drunk they crashed anyone could have been killed then use a gambling company to sign wayne rooney to the number 32 for 32red derby are now the most disgraceful non ethical club in the country
I think what’s different in this case is there’s been an internal investigation to ascertain the circumstances of what’s gone on meaning it’s nit as Black & White as it looks. It could be that Derby are simply pissed off that they have to pay RK through his recovery period until he regains fitness through something that was not of there doing. There may be a clause in his contract which allows Derby to carry out their actions (reduced pay offer & termination if rejected) if proven that he had been negligent to an extent that it led to his injury. Ther’s also the possibility that the internal investigation has uncovered that RK encouraged & used his position as Club Captain to unduly influence the younger, pissed up, impressionable players to take their cars & drop him off on route. The Club may also believe that as Club Captain he had a responsibility to stop the pair from getting in their cars rather than getting in with them. The Law Courts decide who is guilty, or not guilty, of criminal offences & dish out punishments they deem appropriate. A place of work can investigate the circumstances, the actions & the affect the circumstances & actions have had on their business. They can open disciplinary cases as they see appropriate & deliver responses to individuals in line with their individual contracts. On a side, I once managed to save a likeable nob (RIP Pete), who was stopped getting in his car because of how pissed he was, from getting the sack by simply pointing out the Company provided the unlimited drink that had got him pissed at a three hour meeting discussing policy changes, including the Alcohol & Drug Use Policy.
To repeat, no problems with Derby’s actions regarding Keogh. But football in general does find it too easy to gloss over “naughty” behaviour when the players involved are useful to the club, whether that is drink driving, fighting outside nightclubs, knocking about their wives, or rape. About the only thing they get upset about is illicit drug use, and that’s probably because of the risk that the player will get themselves a ban due to testing, rather than ethical or health concerns. (see Livermore, Jake)
Plus don’t forget they sold their ground to themselves for £90 million when it was valued at £40 to avoid falling foul of FFP
So who was the fourth person? He seems to have got away with it. Thomas Lawrence and Mason Bennett driving, Richard Keogh passenger 1, who else? Big Fat Tom who got stripped of the captaincy as quickly as he got it?
