Not sure about you guys, but I've found Obertan to be extremely ineffective since his time at NUFC, looked bright against Arsenal but when he's been starting on the wing he really doesn't seem to do much. In contrast, when ever Marveaux's come on he seems really lively and can change a game for us, really think it's time for him to start a head of Obertan.

    Thoughts?

P.S. Anyone know why Gosling didn't even make the bench after scoring 2 for the reserves midweek?

I agree he should start ahead of Obertan. Obertan needs confidence though (final ball/shot rather than turing back inside all the time) and he could be a world beater IMO. Marveaux at the moment looks to be in really good form though and deserves a start!!

RE Gosling: I imagine it was 'cause he's only just coming back to fitness and played a full 90 for the 2nd string. No point in having him on the bench if he isn't fit enough to be used!

Very excited by the prospect of Marveux but we need to remember he was out for a whole season, and like HBA dont think they want to rush them back, Gosling will have been rested for the Forrest game Tuesday. Obertan needs minuets on the pitch to build confidence, he WILL come good!

I'm just wondering why Marveaux isn't being started? He's clearly the classier of our wingers and was hailed as a coup when we signed him. He looks class. Play him.

Marveaux plays with his head up while Obertan doesn't. Never mind the footballing ability, size or speed, Marveaux look around him while Obertan just runs down the uh, check, uh check, uh useless ball aww, shoot, do it again.

His lobbed through ball to cabaye at the end of the villa game was class. He obviously has talent and i agree he should start ahead of obertan. I get the impression he is quite fragile and injury prone. Probably needs to bulk up a bit and i can see him as a malouda type player.

imo I'd want to see Marveaux start with Obertan given a sub appearance shortly after half-time.

Let Marveaux work his magic, but also give Obertan run-outs to boost confidence.

I'd start Sammy, Marveaux and Obertan against Forest (if Obertan's recovered from Saturday). Sammy deserves the start, as does Marv, and Obertan should be able to shred their defence, boosting his confidence. Bring Gosling on for Obertan after 45-60 minutes.

I'd be starting Marveaux in away games certainly, as part of the midfield three. I worry about Pardew sometimes, he makes some strange decisions. (tempered by him doing ok generally) You couldn't help but feel what might have been on Saturday. Ba was poor again, and did little to lessen the load on Best who tired again. He then brought on Shola! His youngun did more in 4 mins than he managed in 20mins. We need to get past this Shola pity quickly in my book for the good of the team.

But the thing which grinded on me a bit was in his post match interview he spoke of "Ba helping the midfield". If you mean he dropped deep the odd time, yes he did. You can't help but feel a more mobile Marveaux would have seen us causing their negative midfield static midfield more problems. I understand he wants to try and get Ba up to speed and he needs games, but I'm a big believer in reserve games and league cup games for that early season. Not to crib Ba too much either. I'm not going to sit here and say he was good on Saturday, you'd be mad to suggest he was. But I think there have been little signs of life. I think him and Tiote are behind the others. I'm still a big fan of Sammy and think he should be given his head at home. I understand Pardew thinks he is more effective from the bench and wants to protect him but I just think he has earnt a game or two. I can see Pards thinking, he is really direct and is a handful at the end of games as legs tire. I just think he'd do that on occasion from the start too.

I thought Ba did okay actually and showed the makings of a decent partnership with Best.

Agree about Sammy, he looked like more of a threat on the left than Jonas and looks like he has a trick up his sleeve. I remember him winning at least 2 corners in the few minutes he was on. Would be interesting to see him in the CF role rather than Shola. We should exploit his raw talent whilst he's an unknown in the league.

I've come to the conclusion that Ba needs time. He is a big lad and if he is not really up to speed then it will show more unfortunately. I just think out of all the players him and Tiote look short. Tiote stepped his game markedly on Saturday although I think Pards got carried away! He still is not at his best (those stray passes will cost us a goal soon) but he did better. Ba for me was disappointing but I did think 2nd half he looked slightly more lively. I don't think he'll ever look technically great, just not his game. He is always going to look a bit mechanical but I still think he can fulfill the role he was bought to, back up to a main striker. I think that's what folk forget sometimes. He won't ever be a 20 goal a season starter but can provide depth in my opinion. Obviously he's been very underwhelming so far but I'm willing to give him more of a chance.

Once again I thought Obertan had his best game in a Newcastle shirt against Villa and doesnt deserve to be dropped because hes improving with every game, he actually took players on properly on saturday delivered some decent crosses and was all over the place trying to win the ball.

He is a confidence player and his confidence is growing. Marveaux does look very decent when hes came on though so Its a tough one.
