On a different thread I mentioned the Rugby Referee Nigel Owen and how good he was , this started me thinking about Football Referees and my favourite is Collina who was a very good referee , who do you remember as your choice of best Referee during your time watching the game ?
Collina for me too, I grew up watching Football Italia so I saw plenty of him. Never seen a ref since who commanded respect like he did. These days Michael Oliver is the best of the bunch, not internationally but I couldn't name any ref who doesn't work in England. He's one of the few who recognises that the game isn't about him and seems completely neutral.
I can also remember Luty, took no ****. That was some years ago so you like myself must be a canny age.
George Courtney for me in terms of seeing a ref live, especially the way he handled the play off game against the mags, wouldn't let them intimidate him. Collina the best though never saw him live.
Always liked George Courtney met him several times and he was a lovely person , remember the play off at Newcastle when he said their was no way the Newcastle fans were going to get the game abandoned even if they were their past midnight -That told them!!!
72, mate...first visit to Roker in the 50's just before Sergeant Major Luty retired.....I know he was in the RAF but he just had that demeanour. He did a mid fifties FA cup final, might have been 1956.
A local referee called John Reid when I played local football.. He was extremely competent with a fantastically sharp wit.. I always enjoyed when he refereed games I played in..
He lived over the road from me when I was a kid - great bloke with a big booming voice was a head teacher at the local Primary school. Tragically his only son died very young from a fall - was a very sad story, poor bloke
