Last season, with an experienced championship level manager, we finished in 13th place, twelve points behind sixth place.

In the summer we replaced the manager and filled the gaps in our squad with lower league 'prospects' - I'm usually a glass half full type but I'm really scratching my head at the suggestion we might improve to make up the gulf in class to finish top six with a squad bulked up with prospects and coached by an inexperienced, at this level, manager?

What gulf in class? I know you don’t go spes anymore and I think a lot commenting on here don’t either
There is no gulf in class
Wednesday are at the top and are ****
QPR weren’t some great side they were well drilled into a way of playing with an outstanding prospect who we didn’t help lichaj deal with at all
No support or doubling up on eze yet Bowen and growshitski were doubled up all the time

The system, tactics aren’t working at all and imho the players look to be losing faith in it
I’ve never seen us punt it up so much in god knows how many years
I’d fine any goalie who kicks a high ball in the air for Kamil to head a weeks wages
    That’s just stupidity
    Yet we do it
Eaves should drift to the far post every time the ball is out wide yet he goes near post making it easy for the centre backs
Again stupidity let the opposite winger make the near post run and take a centre back with him and let eaves dominate the full back for a header
And the wingers should be able to hit the far post 9/10 times
    Work on it ffs

I’ve explained before that everyone would be far happier if they were glass half empty and always expected the worse from City.

On Saturday for example I predicted we’d lose 0-1. In actual fact we lost 2-3 and if we stay up with the same goal average but because we scored more goals you’ll be thanking that result.

    <cheers>

Come the end of the season the gulf in class will be plain to see, Chazz - the same as it was last season; our best eleven of last season would have given anyone a game but, the Championship with its two games a week dictates that you can't play your best every match, the squad was too thin.

This season's squad has been bulked out with lower league players who might step up, they also might not - we were seven positions and twelve points short last season, our most experienced striker has gone and it would seem from watching on iFollow, that defenders aren't giving young Bowen the time and space he got last season, given this is the case how can we possibly close the gap on the sides with bigger and better quality squads?

See, you can do it. <applause>
And I'd agree with much of it (especially that "the system, tactics aren't working at all and imho the players look to be losing faith in it".

But I'd still contend that, in addition to all that, the plain fact remains that actually the squad just isn't good enough for anyone to sensibly be talking about 'top 6 / play off potential'. Bowen & Grosicki clearly are good enough, we have a few with real potential that may or may not develop, the rest are bang average for this level at very best. And we have a manager and coaching set up that the evidence to date would seem to suggest is sadly lacking. Opinion based on attending twice and watching every other game, in full, remotely.

I don’t think we need a striker that can score in every 2/3 games. We have Bowen and Grosicki so even a striker that could get us 10-12 a season would be more than adequate. That’s 1 in 4 - Campbell would have been perfect.

That's the Allam factor. The people of Hull deserve a decent club with a decent ownership. Sadly we are stuck with the Allams.

I just think there are better teams that will take those spots. WBA, Leeds, Forest, Swansea, Cardiff, Preston and Brentford will be up there. Other teams might not be amazing in terms of quality, but they've got their **** together. We're far too inconsistent at the moment, we look great one week and bullshit the next.

    I'd take 20th right now.

Stronger squads will now start pulling away. The way we are shipping goals I would be happy with a clean sheet at the moment.

We have a decent club Hull City AFC. We have decent supporters. We also have owners who have completely alienated huge swathes of our supporters either through lack of ambition or some of the most stupid statements most of us have ever heard in football.

Hurts me to say but the people of Hull get the club they deserve, and I'm one of them. I still attend every home game and as many away as I can but I am in the minority. Which leaves me wide open for the superfan insults, because sometimes the truth hurts.
The crowds after WW2 were tremendous when people flocked to see any sort of entertainment after the restrictions of the war. Every football club could attract a crowd. They exploded under Raich Carter and dropped as dramatically when he left. We had a brief increase at the end of the 50's but they soon dropped again when that particular era ended in a quick relegation back to the 3rd division.
They returned on the back of Harold Needlers investment and increased dramatically when the team started winning, peaking in 65/66 during the record breaking promotion from the 3rd division. City still attracted decent gates the following season but when people realised the dream of First Division football wasn't going to materialise they soon dropped off again.
Returning in 1970 when Terry Neill arrived but by the end of that season we were down to gates of 11,000 again. Where had they all gone ?
The fans deserted the club throughout the rest of the 70's and for most of the 80's.
Three appearances at the High Court on winding up orders, and the once proud stadium crumbling around the ever decreasing band of faithful fans who remained.
Then returning again when we moved to the KC and started winning again.
A winning team in the old 4th division could fill the ground and after the twenty plus years of ****e we had endured before that I don't think there are many clubs in the land who could have done that.
We hit the pinnacle when we finally reached the Premier League, every home and away game selling out but by the second season the gates were already declining. Why ?
    Today ?
We are again one of the worse supported clubs in our division just as we were when the bubble burst after the Needler/Waggy and Chilton days.
So where have they all gone ?
And what exactly do we deserve ?
Allams or no Allams the way our crowds have risen then dipped just as quickly over the years follow a very familiar pattern. We sing when we are winning and turn our backs when we are not.
    We are a fickle bunch.

A really well written reply and I respect the fact that you attend so many games. Good on you. However lots of clubs find their gates affected by success on the pitch, some more than others. Some find other things to do, sometimes I think these days the cost of attending is prohibitive. However the many who go through the years, through thick and thin really do deserve a decent club. Others like myself who can’t attend anymore maybe not so much. The ones who don’t care about about football don’t count anyway. The ones who do care deserve a decent football club they can carry on caring about.

Of course gates are affected by success on the field and we at City hadn't had much success until fairly recent times.
We are somewhat unique in Hull because people do follow a winning team and cost does come into it, especially in the modern era. Cost in 1970 was less then 50p to get and we still lost half of our support in one season, today the cost of attending is ridiculously high and the alternatives available for your money are a lot more then there were in the early 70's. Someone can even claim to be a fan of the top Premier League club of their choice without leaving their armchair for a fraction of the cost of doing the hard miles and supporting their local team through thick and thin. We didn't have that competition in the 70's.
I say we are unique here because we have not one but two other clubs in the city who are competing for support and sponsorship. In a sport that is far easier and cheaper to be successful in.
When our gates go up because we are winning ( usually) the two rugby league clubs suffer and visa versa. We are not good for each other. We each hold each other back.
Therefore the floating support can get their weekly sport fix and bit of reflected glory by switching from football to rugby league and this has been the case for as long as I can remember. Today others can sit in the pub and be classed as a supporter of any football club in the Prem. Football is on tap for them, they don't need to support losers..
So you could say that Hull is a sporting city ? With an average of 10/12,000 people venturing out every week end to watch professional sport in the city.
But where would a club be with a fanbase of 12,000 every week be ?
    Mid table Division 1 ?
Is that where we deserve to be ?
