So Southgate has come out and said the problem with England is that too many of his players are out of form for their clubs....

No Gareth it’s your inability to stick to your original word a few years ago where you said players should be picked on form.

When players aren’t playing well you drop them. It’s one of the basics of management.

I wonder if he’s scared to bench some of his so called stars?

I'm finding more and more that people just watch England when it comes to the Euro's or the World Cup and use it as an excuse for a piss up/bbq etc...or maybe that's just me :1980_boogie_down:

Hardly "woes". Same England as always. Players vastly over-rated by the Sky marketing engine, made to look better thanks to the foreigners they're alongside. Any squad that has Jesse Lingard near the first team is going to struggle.

They looked magnificent against tonight's pub team.

Thought they handled last night very well and it was a good way to bounce back after a poor performance BUT...

What I will say is that I have no time for Southgate though now - pick players on merit?

Michael Keene, Tyrone Mings, Fikayo Timouri - what do these players have over Jamall Lascelles? Mings and Timouri have 29 EPL performances between them and neither has played anymore than 7 EPL games in a season before this year. Can't tell me its to do with blooding youth as Keene and Mings are both older than him.

Not sure if its his old Boro head on there being biased against Jamall but no one can, honestly, hand on heart say any of those 3 lads deserve a chance MORE than Lacselles.

Id say 3 out of 4 CB spots are taken in Gomez, Maguire and Stones but surely that 4th spot is open and I don't think there another English CB in the league who deserves a chance more than Lacselles personally, captained an average team to 10th and 13th over the last two seasons, kept the most clean sheets away from home bar City and Liverpool, scored more than ALL three of them combined in the league - how can he not get in above them?

I'd also not have changed from the 3-4-3 we were playing at the World Cup - we don't have the midfield for it and honestly don't think have the defenders to play 2 CB's as there is no protection there - no out and out holding DM apart from Declan Rice. Barkley, Maddison, Loftus Cheek, Henderson, Winks, etc etc aren't good enough to break up play against bigger teams which is where we fall down every tournament.

Excellent performance last night and a good way to bounce back from a rare shocker under Southgate. The fairweathers like Class of 2019 are always going to turn after the odd bad result. Excellent changes from Southgate and that is what I like about him. He doesn't care about hype etc. I didn't want him as manager but he has shown once again it is not a requirement to be a good club boss to be an international manager. Fair play he has proved me wrong.

Some of the problems from Friday were down to his errors, and its refreshing that rather than bury his head like previous incumbents, he just accepts he got it wrong and changes it. The midfield bringing in Winks for Rice was a master stroke. A more mobile midfield with a bit of dynamism. Barkley too was ideally suited to giving us more mobility. I still think over the long term against the very best sides Barkley is a problem. He still loses possession in really bad areas. Its a shame he's not at Man C because I really think Pep could iron out his game for him.

Rashford would not have been a change I'd have made but he banged in a pearler so you can't argue with that.

I've been saying for some time Michael Keane is not good enough with the ball to play centre back in international football. You see a lot more of the ball. Mings was excellent and has shunted himself right to the front of the queue. He has long been highly thought of, I remember us being linked when at Ipswich. Been a bit unlucky with injury but looks back to his best. I'd be happy with Mings, Maguire, Gomez, Stones. Nice balance, all good with the ball and plenty of pace. Above the question is asked what does Mings have that Lascelles doesn't? Quite a bit to be honest. He is far better with the ball, and far quicker. Two good traits for international football. Its why Stones looks much better in international football.

Again Southgate didn't waste time to correct his mistake at left back either. Then we had Chilwell coming in for the poor Danny Rose. I'd be done with Rose now and concentrate on Chilwell. He is absolutely outstanding - got everything for a full back.

The key for England now is how we continue the transition of the young players who are the world leaders at younger age groups into the seniors. Defensively we have great options. On top of the centre backs, we also have the likes of Walker, Trippier, Wan Bissaka and Alexander-Arnold, Chilwell, Shaw and Sessegnon. That left side looks a little flimsy behind Chilwell. Wide I think we are the envy of a lot of sides with Sterling, Sancho, Odoi, Lookman etc etc. We basically have loads. Central midfield is our weak area still. Ignoring we clearly have the next Keane and Scholes in the Longstaff brothers, I'm not very convinced. Henderson, Barkley, Mount, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rice, Winks - its not exactly wow. Obviously there is the Longstaffs, Loftus Cheek, Maddison - we need to find something. Its a shame Foden isn't playing and Lewis Cook will hopefully soon get recognition because he is a serious talent if he can stay fit. The players are there but we need them all playing regular for their clubs first and foremost. Strikers wise Kane is obviously good at what he does. Wilson I really like and think he might actually better suited. The best is yet to come though as I hope young Brewster at Liverpool makes a full recovery from that bad injury. Abraham is useful too so we have plenty.

The future for England is very very bright.

Tbh I've not seen Mings offer any noticeable great speed in anything I've seen of him and certainly no more than Lascelles, who also has a better passing accuracy despite both having played 9 games this season - ironically this is one of the reasons Southgate selected him alongside his "leadership skills".... which again I'd suggest Jamaal coming in and kicking arse in his first season we were relegated against some senior players and captaining the squad for the subsequent 4 seasons would point to Southgate being full of ****.

I've quite enjoyed reading this thread. Lascelles for England? I think there are 3 better centre backs here, so not for me, for pretty much the same reasons as pouchy.
I have no interest in watching England outside of finals, and even then, not until it actually gets competitive. I will say, Southgate has been a little better than my expectations, but in truth, we still do not look like a nation that will win major competitions.
My biggest concern would be how anonymous Kane looks in big games, but there are others.
