An interesting runner in the US on the weekend was Omaha Beach. A couple of days before the Kentucky Derby last May, Omaha Beach was withdrawn fromthe race while pre-post favourite. He needed surgery for an entrapped epiglottis. (The flap in the throat that stops food from entering the wind pipe and lungs.) He was set for a comeback last June but fell victim to a virus. Then in August, poor track work saw him sidelined once again.

He returned on the weekend in the G1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship over 6f. In winning he earned a start in the Breeders'Cup Sprint. He clocked 1:08:79. Can he in against the best sprinters in the game?

The Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) proved to be a torrid old affair. Bowies Hero earned a start in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

No 5, black and yellow, yellow cap.

The 12F, G1 Pattison Canadian International Stakes run yesterday at Toronto's Woodbine. The Maxime Guyon ridden French raider Ziyad went to the post a 1-1 favourite, just ahead of the David Simcock, Andrea Atzeni ridden Desert Encounter, who was looking to go back to back in the race. The latter starting at 2-1. Andrew Balding had the 10-1 chance Pivoine. Mentioned prices are all S.P.

I saw on the racing news yesterday that she came out of the race well and she would be staying in training next year. No access to the internet though. Was dying to put that up as soon as I heard it

I'm not too sure if too many people out side of Australia would have heard of a race called The Everest. It's a race devised by Sydney racing folk to try drawing attention from the Spring Carnival in Melbourne. It's something that hasn't gone down too well with a lot of racing folk. Normally they try to work hand and hand, which most of the time avoids major clashes. But not this time. As the Spring Carnival gains momentum with the running of the Caulfield Cup this Saturday, (a major lead in race to the Melbourne Cup) Sydney has chosen to pit The Everest against the big Melbourne race. Both races will take place this Saturday.

So what's the big deal with The Everest? Prize money and the fight back against the invading stayers who've dominated the Melbourne Cup. Personally, I think it's a load of horse ****. What has a 1200m speed test have to do with combating 3200m events. I think it's more a cultural battle between the cities.

And The Everest? It's the world richest turf race. The race is worth nearly 7,500,000 GBP. And for the second year on a row, GB has a runner. Aiden O'Brien has Ten Sovereigns in the race, winner of two G1s, the latest of which was this year's July Cup . He'll be ridden by Ryan Moore. O'Brien tested the waters last year with US Navy Flag, but he failed to fire and finished down the track. Maybe this year. 25-1 seems pretty fair value.

2400m Caulfield Cup, the premier lead up race for the Melbourne Cup. There were quite a number of very unlucky runners. The Japanese raider Mer De Glace proved much too good on the day. He's second from the outside gate. No.3, green and white, red armbands and cap. He had it won a long way out.

When I was at the height of my money making ante-post punting on the Melbourne Cup I used to love getting up to watch the lead in races to snaffle the good prices for The Cup!

One of my top years was when the Japanese had the first and second at Flemington on the first Tuesday!

If you are interested in having a small each way punt before british racing starts today there is an interesting runner in the 11:25 at Clairefontaine: Benalua from the highly respected Laffron-Parias stable.

Accelerated really well in testing conditions when 2nd and 1st on first 2 starts this season. Not so good on faster going last run (good to soft) but back on heavy today and talented rider takes off valuable claim. 10/1 on offer worth a bet.

The wonderful Japanese mare Lys Gracieux was absolutely hammered in the betting in today's $5,000,000 Cox Plate. Fresh off her sensational success last June in the G1 Takarazuka Kinen, the visitor settled well back but came with an almighty rush to secure her third G1 race win.

Lys Gracieux is drawn 4 from the outside. She settles back in the field and is third last at the 800m pole. No 9. Green and white, white sleeves with red band, red cap.
