Whilst watching the mighty Swans on MOTD and I must confess to being alcohol affected I could have sworn I heard Mark Lawrenson say that Scott Sinclair had scored the first Premier League goal outside the UK !!

Ok, geography is not my strong point but I was always under the impression that we're on mainland UK. Was I hallucinating or totally pissed ? Did he actually say it or have we been transported to to another country. Bit of help here please.

Yes my friend...he said it all right...as he realised what he said he tried to correct himself by then saying 'I mean outside England'.....don't know which is worst really as he obviously thinks England and the UK are the same thing....a bit like my Italian family and other european countries who often refer to the UK as Inghilterra...maybe it's due to the fact that whether it's Wales or Scotland or Ireland all of us here in the UK speak eengleesh....as in Italy they speak Italian, France French and so on...so I understand what they mean and put up with it but you don't expect the same reasoning from a British football pundit here in the UK...

Working in Ibiza, I've been astounded by how little people know of Wales. I'd say over 50% of Europeans I've dealt with in 3 years have, at worst, never heard of it and at best have heard the name but have no idea where we are or whatever. They always know Scotland and Ireland, but Wales is a distant relative, clearly!

Maybe he said it as he believes it's the only way his beloved Liverpool can play in "Europe" this season.

I just watched it back and I still can't believe he said it, poor old Lineker didn't know where to look and it seem'd as if Shearer was trying not to piss himself. Should we tell the Bluebirds they may not be in the UK too?

I worked out of the country for over 10 years , and people just thought Wales was in England to be honest, I educated them in their failures of geography ;) to be honest it's partly our own fault that we fail to promote ourselves as a national identity, you can't blame England on the fact Wales suck at advertising and we normally call ourselves British abroad.

As for the chap on motd , well not very bright at all <laugh>

Now now John play nicely, if you think they don't know where Swansea is just remember they have at least heard of Swansea. At no point did I hear Cardiff being mentioned on MOTD last night,

John, I live in Ibiza, which is in Spain, which is, in turn, in Europe. Ever heard of it? Nobody has mentioned a city, in fact believe it or not they haven't heard of our fair country, never mind cities. Stop being obnoxious and childish, what's the matter, a little disappointed you haven't got the goals thing to wind us up about now? In response to your jibes about attendance, we had nominally less than Bolton and Blackburn, one of whom was playing Arsenal. Who were you playing yesterday John, do you even follow Cardiff any more?

And we are on the world stage promoting our city in the premier league, think people will learn about our city and the surrounding areas, they may even learn about Wales as a whole!

No real surprise, Lawrenson is as thick as ****e in the neck of a bottle. And what about that shirt he was wearing?

JH must have been a late night last night to watch your failures on tv.

As a number of posters have said nobody has an idea where either Swansea or Wales are but by the end of this season billions of people who watch the PL will.
Shame really they'll still won't have heard of Cardiff.

JH consider we have played five games kept three clean sheets and lost to the best team in PL and lost away to Arsenal to a freak goal. Not bad.

Jusr a few other points all 1sts

    Welsh team in PL
Welsh team to lose in PL
Welsh team to draw in PL
Welsh team to win in PL
Welsh team to score in PL
Welsh team to have PL fans as good as we are
and it goes on and on, so JH go back to your 2nd rate team.

And before you post to say 1st to go down possibly but we are enjoying the experience.

Lawrenson's gaff was a slip of the tongue and was corrected straight away to be fair. Anyone who takes offence is rather small minded. Bit like pea brain Hughs.

I saw this. Just shows how ignorant MOTD presenters, and others, are about Wales. Apparently, due to Torchwood and Dr Who, Wales is better known in the USA than in the MOTD studio.

I'm just not getting this "first Welsh team in the Premier League", "first goal outside England" thing. Don't they know we've been there before? Don't they know we were top of that league for a number of weeks in 81/82? We HAVE already played in the top flight for two seasons. It's just called something different now. Frustrating!

Brisbane,it's a part of the myth that surrounds The Premier League. To me it's still the First Division. I prefer the old F.D. it was a better League, and rarely dominated by one or two Clubs.

I have found this as well. Outside Europe most people haven't even heard of Wales at all. But I think the same is true the other way around. How many people from Wales could name all the Euro countries or countries in other parts of the World? Wales is tiny and insignificant to most people. Maybe that will change a little if Swans do well in the Premier League.
