After Smug suggested earlier that the badge was likely to be changed I'd like to give my suggestion for its design. We are called The Black Cats so lets have the black cat design that is on the outer walls of the North Stand extension as our badge with the words 'The Back Cats' and nothing else on it. Arsenal are the Gunners and have a canon as their badge, West Ham are the Hammers and their badge is a pair of hammers.Man U are the Red Devils and Liverpool the Liverbird. What do you all think? Please be gentle its my first thread lol.
I'm pretty sure I read when I was a kid that there was a Black Cat that lived under the main stand and it became a sort of lucky mascot.
Each to their own mate. Firstly, if the Dell people come in and want to spend a fortune on making us decent and have their hearts set on a black cat badge then fair enough. Don't change the name of the club or the red and white stripes but badges change quite frequently anyway so knock yerselves out. That being said I don't like the black cat thing, think it would look a bit cheap and franchisey and I think they could do a much more popular design by doing a vastly simplified version of the ship badge. I get looking forward, but tradition and history is a huge part of a football club and I wouldn't like to see us overpromote that bloody cat, it's not really a thing imo. But like I say, if it helps them make us successful then crack on!
I've heard both versions mate, they get a mention here http://www.soccer365.com/why-are-sunderland-known-as-the-black-cats/
No bother! One thing mind, I'd take this paragraph with a pinch of salt: "Ahead of the 1887/88 campaign, Sunderland official adopted their now famous red and white striped jerseys that included a new badge. The new club badge included a Black Cat along with a ship, part of the Sunderland Coat of Arms, and a football in front of the red and white stripes." Others will know more SAFC history than I do, but I didn't think we had badges on the strips at first? In fact I thought the first "badge" (other than for the 37 cup final) was just the written "SAFC" around the time of the 73 final, then the ship badge when badges became a thing. I might be wrong like
Well as much as weve used Black Cats varying from Black Lions, Puma (Leopard) and the common moggie in various forms... Id really hope that no attempt at rebranding as a club is concerned ever attempts to use 'Pumas' in our name or identity... the lions on the badge threw me intially (Ive never seen a black lion although I thin kthe City of Sunderland crest has lions on it)... The big 'Black Cat' weve used is it actually a puma/leopard or just a angry moggie... anyway I digress... a great number of people like to keep our local history incorporated into the badge.. the ship, the bridge, penshaw, a cat.... are we ready to lose all of this as part of moving forward.... Im not sure Id like to see a Qashqai on the badge despite Nissan being a huge part of the area... Ultimately Im in the same camp as a large number of other whod happily have the old badge back on the Hummel kits.... Its simple... football and a ship.... I await some amazing designs
I've got as my desktop the famous first painting of a football game 'A corner kick' the one that hangs in the foyer at the SOL. I've just blown it up and there is no badge on any of our shirts. I know its just a painting but there is so much detail in the painting that the artist Thomas Henry had gone to great lengths to show what he saw on that day.
Aye, I checked here http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Sunderland/Sunderland.htm doesn't show anything until the 70s. I always had a feeling the ship badge was our first one tbh, others have been shown but I always thought they were mock ups that somehow became accepted as having been an actual badge. Does anyone know if we've actually had a badge other than the 1937 cup final one, the "SAFC" on the early 70s kits, the ship badges (blue and black backgrounds) and the current one?
I like our current badge, and I started following us when we had the old ship badge. I’d prefer they left it alone, I know some think it is too ‘busy’. I think we have a number of more pressing problems to resolve before the badge. Maybe after the fourth Champions League success
I'm a fan of the current badge so I wouldn't change it, if we did though I'd be happy with it being focused on the ship building heritage of Sunderland, although I'd like it to look fancy like the current one does and not stripped back and simplified. The ship could have a lot of detail on it, why not. I don't mind us being known as the black cats but for me it's more of an informal nickname than something I'd want on the badge.
tin hat on, I've always felt its a bit of a rip off of the mags badge, certainly too similar to it for my liking
Unless that black cat was knocking around the first few months of 1973 what luck has it actually brought us?
