He means remaining in Europe. A Customs Union solves the problem, at least as far as the border issues.
It will have been resolved in the sense that the country won't go down the tubes, or spend years scraping around trying to do trade deals that may or may not be actually beneficial. It then allows any leave campaign time to try and plan an EU withdrawal that isn't an obvious ploy to make billionaires richer at the cost of everybody else in the country, aand actually campaign for it when a plan exists. Possibly most important, it prevents giving either side of the Irish dispute any excuse to restart the troubles. There are NO benefits to leaving without a deal, and a deal can't happen as long as we refuse to agree to the Irish backstop. If there were any benefits, we would hear about them. We haven't heard of any benefits apart from proven lies and fairytales ergo, there aren't any
A good summary RJ. Another way of looking at it is this: whether we leave or remain roughly half the country are going to be upset. However, if we remain, at least we won’t be subject to the inevitable job losses, food and medicine shortages, travel problems, resurgence of the Irish Troubles, Scottish Independence, and so on that would follow from leaving, with or without a deal. So the upset Leavers at least won’t have all that on their consciences!
I just want to take this chance to point out that all the systems and infrastructure required to carry out the customs checks would have to be developed and in place in less than a month. As well as every exporter to and from the UK trained to use it.
Depends on what you are trying to resolve. What’s more important? Leaving the EU and have Northern Ireland return to bloodshed, or Remain and keep the peace, as there does not appear to be a way of avoiding a hard border, without the reunification of the island of Ireland, and with it another chunk of the UK breaking off, as Scotland will go.
W Which would then potentially create another hard border with Scotland as the EU would still need to protect the single market should Scotland apply for membership.
I've asked this question before. No logical answers. In fact, no answers at all. I mean come on Leavers, convince me that if we end up doing this exit thing, that it is the right thing to do. I don't see it.
No. But I read back my post, and thought oh-oh, he's going to think I was asking him. So check my edit.
People I have spoken to who voted Leave fall into 2 camps. The largest group repeat all the usual bollocks about laws, courts, lack of democracy, agriculture and fisheries, European armies, and so on, and when all these are pointed out to be untrue, fall back on the “will of the people” argument. A smaller group take the globalist conspiracy line as spouted by Impsaint, although they don’t appear to have an answer to the fact that only the super-rich will benefit from Brexit.
This globalist direction is just an inevitability, and will be beneficial especially if it is properly done. Cooperation and global partnership will result, and things like controlling environmental excesses would be much, much easier to tackle. Little Englander thinking will solve nothing, but just make it harder for the UK to succeed. It has never been beneficial to pull up the draw bridges to resolve things, unless one wants to cut oneself off from having an influence on the world. I know that little Englanders want to protect the little they have. What about the people who for generations have had nothing? Globalisation should help make the world more equal. And the other argument is about losing national culture. BS. Get off social media if you want to stay parochial.
And don't forget Coronation Street and Eastenders, and the like. The "high quality" TV dramas that project British society onto their audiences. I avoid that sh!t like the plague. If that's an example of losing British culture, let's lose it, pronto.
I'm not a fan of the soaps either TSS, but I didn't want to list everything I don't like about Britain, or I'd be on page 2 by now. There's loads I love about these islands, but plenty of "our culture" that I'd quite happily see the back of.
Yep same. And you never lose great culture. For example, when I was young, if a person suggested to me to read some poems by John Betjeman, I would probably have said something like, "what, that old fossil?" But for the last 15-20 years I've got it. And that will never die. His poems are in books and archives, and the BBC carry all his old TV films in their archive. Same for "Out of Town" Jack Hargreaves on Youtube. And loads of others. With electronic and paper archives our national culture is going to remain to infuence us and guide us. And we won't lose it in globalisation.
Tory home sec Piri Patel gave a speech about stopping immigration and rising up 'against the neo-liberal elites' She is the daughter of immigrants, born in islington. The hypocrisy of the current Tory party knows no bounds.
I find it frankly unfathomable when families who were recent immigrants vote for Brexit on the basis of stopping immigration. I mean, essentially one half of my family are immigrants. My great-great Grandfather first came over from Italy before there were modern civilian passports. He eventually went back. How can I be against the free movement of people?
