It wouldn’t make any difference as they’re two separate legal entities. There’s nothing stopping the takeover of the club and any purchase of Short’s hotel company happening later on if that’s what their plan is.

Unless their plan for the club and maximising revenue involves being able to expand the rest of the stadium. In which case, if they foresee problems with that happening whilst not owning the hotel, I doubt they'd want to complete the takeover until they know that they have the hotel and the land surrounding it either in agreement with the expansion if not purchased.

Or in simpler terms for some; as a family of four, you wouldn't purchase a one bedroom house under the proviso that you'd potentially get planning permission to expand it down the line, you'd want to make sure you 100% would be approved before you bought the house. (Unless you don't like your kids... there's always a shed.)

Oh I totally agree. I’m just saying it would be unlikely in my opinion that they’d hold off buying the club for the sake of the hotel.

There’s plenty of other cheap land near the ground that is ripe for redevelopment and I’m sure that the club owns the land where the car park and ticket office is anyway, which is where the stadium would be expanded to rather than over the road towards the hotel.

Unless I'm mistaken, the hotel doesn't have any land other than what it's built on! Even the road belongs to the club. Had this hotel " story" got any credibility, is it backed up anywhere?

I suppose it depends on how the planning permission for redevelopment of the stadium works. I would imagine not only would there be plenty of disruption to the hotel due to the actual building, but there's potential for the land it is built on to be de-valued by way of the expansion to the ground. Lots of reasons for there to be permission required by the hotel owner.

Not that I can see any reason why Ellis would reject a stadium expansion. I expect in reality, if it's true they want the hotel included that they want to own the surrounding area around the ground too to help with any potential redevelopment of the whole area. No use developing the area if there's a blob right in the middle that you don't own.

If the information Smug got was sound, they want everything in place and planned prior to announcing, stadium expansion and redevelopment is probably part of the plan and needs all the boxes ticking prior to takeover. For all we know, they want to redevelop the hotel too.

There is a large piece of land between the stadium and hotel. Are they wanting to buy the swimming pool as well???

Absolutely no idea if it's credible. I'm just speculating on the presumption that's the reason. It's a logical reason for a delayed announcement if we're lead to believe there's something holding up an announcement.

Depends what the 'expand' vision is? The stadium is designed to be extended to 62k(?) without changing the footprint - the roof on the west stand pivots through 90 degrees to form the back wall of an extension to the upper concourse, pop the pre-cast concrete in for the seats and then put the new roof on.

They may well want the hotel as a revenue generator, especially if we do become successful, but suspect it won't be a deal-breaker. As others have said, the club does not appear to have any further emotional leverage over Short since he absorbed the debt and any negotiation will be directly with his representatives. No idea what other land Short owns around the Stadium.

If the hotel is possibly a snagging point for expanding the stadium then surely the Aquatic Centre is more so. Perhaps the hold up is getting the council on board with moving that. Rumours re that they want everyone onboard so it’s not that outlandish that the council are involved at this stage.
This is pure speculation from a no nowt knacker that works in a factory. :emoticon-0100-smile

Oh yes, I know it's a relatively simple expansion as stadium expansions go which helps a great deal. There is the inevitable building work accompanying that, and from experience of planning permission there's the consideration of how changing the height of the building impacts surrounding area etc. For all we know, they may want to expand further than the already existing arrangements. On the flip side, they might not want to expand at all and they just want the hotel to convert the top floor into a penthouse for their trips over to watch Sunderland vs Real Madrid in a few years time.

You can be forgiven for expecting the announcement to be sooner than later, the SD takeover happened relatively quickly after being told about it. SD told us on a podcast that there was a preferred buyer, as supporters we don’t have any real idea of the timescale for a takeover but going by the past we have all been fooled into thinking it would be done quicker.

Other things pointed to it being done sooner too, like being at the match/ spotted in Goa.

Maybe you aren’t finding much out now as the end is nigh so to speak and there really isn’t much to add.

I am definitely not itk. However, I don't think there is any actual delay, just people being impatient and trying to think of something that could be a problem. I think it's just the normal process for a multi million pound deal.

Just picturing it in my mind, I'm sure there's at least one car park on it.

  15. Not sure mate.....dozens and dozens of times I've gone by it. I stayed in the hotel last season for a night match,at the NE corner,it surely can't be more than 20 or 30 metres away? It does go by the car park mind.

Am I the only one who thinks planning Stadium expansion is a bit 'previous'. I also recall that 'Bob' designed the stadium so that the two sides that do not have 3 tiers can do so... fairly straightforwardly?

Also I cannot see why Short owning the hotel and the council a swimming pool is a problem? Short may sell the hotel...but the pool and foundation?

Roker Report and ALS set the clock ticking by virtually declaring the takeover done.
