Pompey have proven their calibre in cup competitions so far this season, but now they are looking for a run of league wins. A midweek draw with Burton means there has been just one three-point haul from the opening six fixtures. And Kenny Jackett’s side will be looking to improve that statistic when they visit Wycombe at the weekend. But they will not be expecting an easy test against a Chairboys side currently sitting in third spot, albeit having played three games more. Defeat at Gillingham last Saturday was the first they have suffered in League One, while they also exited the Carabao Cup to Reading on penalties in the first round. Matches at Adams Park have resulted in victories over Bolton (2-0), MK Dons (3-2), Southend (4-3) and Lincoln (3-1), as well as Tuesday’s night Accrington stalemate. That win against the Shrimpers was particularly memorable, as Gareth Ainsworth’s men were trailing when the game entered the 89th minute. Pompey enjoyed success on their last visit to Wycombe back in April, with Brett Pitman’s brace and a Jamal Lowe strike sealing a 3-2 triumph. TEAM NEWS Pompey are still missing the injured quartet of Lee Brown (Achilles), Marcus Harness (thigh), Bryn Morris (groin) and Jack Whatmough (knee). Wycombe will be without Paul Smyth and Alex Samuel, while Rolando Aarons faces a late fitness test. A midweek draw with Burton means there has been just one three-point haul from the opening sixfixtures. --- Coincidentally the only game I've been to this season
Pompey's poor form to date puts undue pressure on them to get three points. Given Wycombe's form a draw would be a good result I feel. It is interesting that the bookies have made Pompey favourites despite the relative form of the two sides. Clearly more objective judges than Kenny Jackett see potential in Pompey! lets hope they are right!!!
1-0 defeat is the final result, with an 82nd minute penalty from Adebayo "The Beast" Akinfenwa, after an alleged handball in the box by Tom Naylor. Just got home from holiday, listened on car radio on way back, and it sounded a boring negative performance by PFC yet again ! On the radio, you could clearly hear many of the Pompey fans repeatedly calling for Kenny Jackett to quit as manager. When the commentators state that striker Oli Hawkins was probably one of our best performers playing at centre half, that really says everything, doesn't it ?
Final Match Stats:- Home Team: Wycombe ............Away Team: Portsmouth Possession: Home 45% Away 55% Shots: Home 7 Away 11 Shots on Target: Home 3 Away 2 Corners: Home 3 Away 8 Fouls: Home 17 Away 15
Well the statistics seem to give Pompey the edge in all but shots on target - the critical one. I suppose a penalty is a 'shot on target.' I think Jackett is torn between picking his best side and trying to keep a big squad happy. While Hawkins appears to have had a good game his selection, with two centre backs signed in the summer, appears to be based on player rotation. I think the time has come for selecting his best side and sticking with it for a few games. Based on the few glimpses I have had of Cannon on highlights etc he strikes as a raw and enthusiastic player who could develop with a run of games but will not improve with an occasional start and a few sub appearances. I think Harness's return is critical. Although notionally a winger it appeared as if we were playing two up front when he was in the side. I feel our best combination is when we play two wingers with Marquis. Until Harness returns this could be Curtis and Williams, with hopefully William's form threatening Curtis's selection when Harness is fit.
I don't think we have had a settled starting line up so far this season due to injuries and the manager's "tinkering" with the side. A few of the youngsters like Leon Maloney, Eoin Teggart or Joe Hancott on the bench might be a good idea. They have the hunger and youthful ability to come on and ruffle a few feathers. Some of our senior players just appear to be going through the motions when they play.
I suppose it is easy to forget it is a game of fine margins. I said before the game a point would be a reasonable result and - looking positively - we were only one penalty kick away from that. This time last year a lot of 'fine margins' were going our way. It appears Wycombe were unimpressive but the 'fine margin' went their way.
