Great article by Iwan - 'You couldn't single one player out, they were all magnificent and they beat Manchester City at their own game. And to think after the Liverpool game people suggested that Daniel Farke might have to change his philosophy of playing! I shouldn't, but I'm going to single one player out for special praise - after a slow start to the season, Emi Buendia really showed what he was about and terrorised Pep's men. It wasn't just that he had a hand in all three goals but his work rate, just like all the other lads, was phenomenal - and it had to be to beat Manchester City. In my seven years playing for Norwich and in the many times I've been back to watch a game at Carrow Road, I've never heard the place so loud! It was the best atmosphere I've witnessed and it really galvanised the players. Before the game, because of all the injury problems Norwich had and who their opponents were, people were talking about how many Manchester City would put past Tim Krul as they are so ruthless and don't take their foot off the gas. But that didn't happen thanks to an incredible work ethic, bravery from the players and an amazing set of supporters.' https://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwich-city/iwan-roberts-on-manchester-city-1-6280147
Why sympathise with Delia? Carrow road has rarely been the most vocal of grounds but, has she had any great initiatives to get the fans singing or improving the atmosphere? A drunken rant asside? Under her reign (Admittedly) in this new all seater era did she do anything to arrest the slide in atmosphere over many years? Did she continue to charge high prices that might well have pushed the working classses and the traditional vociferous mob out? OK, she was involved in the appointment of both Farke and Webber. Both seem proactive in building bridges and harnessing the power of the crowd. But I would credit Balls or Tom not her there. And even then I believe Webber takes the credit. Then again, has the crowd really only improve periodically with periods of success? Like right now. Perhaps the fans and in particular the Barclay End Projekt have really self started this great improvement? Or as I would say a combination of these two. I often wonder if the BEP initives would have been successful had we have mearly replicated DF's first season for a midtable finish and some very vanilla football. I think the natural default setting to winge would likely have strangled the inititive, or slowed any progress to a crawl. Bah!
She started to turn this club around with the appointment of David McNally and Paul Lambert, saved us from the very brink of destruction!
Meanwhile, back to the football. I've had another read of the tactical analysis and this captures DF's tactics and how they were carried out: "They encouraged City to bring possession out of defence and resisted engaging with them until they reached the final third; Pukki would put moderate pressure on Stones or Otamendi as they advanced, while Stiepermann would attempt to occupy Rodri. Buendia and Cantwell worked particularly hard to track back in a bid to negate the threat of City’s wide attackers in one-on-one situations against the Norwich full-backs. The combination of that, and McLean and Tettey tracking the runs of David Silva and Gündogan, prevented City receiving possession in the areas they pose their greatest threat. The understanding and communication within Daniel Farke’s team was also exceptional; even as City rotated to draw individuals out of position, they proved capable of passing runners on and ensuring that gaps were not left for the champions to penetrate." The communication and teamwork was exceptional and DF clearly used the international break to thoroughly prepare the players. https://www.coachesvoice.com/tactical-analysis-norwich-3-manchester-city-2/
There was an interesting piece of analysis, I can't remember if it was posted on here, but it showed how Farke had sacrificed the wings deliberately in his set up, the team defended the width of the box mostly. Then there was an incredible stat that in the 4 games where Man City had their most crosses they had lost all 4 games. They had 31 crosses against us.
That was a brilliant analysis Rick and thanks for posting it. DF does seem to be learning VERY quickly.
That's it, in a nutshell General; "the default setting to whinge". True support means getting behind your team whatever the circumstances just so long as they (the players) are trying their best. The players don't appoint the board or the manager/head coach. What distinguishes the Toon Army and others like them is that, whatever is going on off the pitch, when the whistle blows they get behind their team. Just renewing your season ticket year after year is not enough and the title of "plastic" can still be deserved even by those who pass regularly through the turnstiles. "Great support" means more than selling out the ground. "Here endeth the lesson" (as they used to say when my Nan took me to church, bless her).
I'd love to know your reasoning for "her taking us there!" She ploughed her own money into the club to save it, she appointed some disappointing managers but she's a cook not a football expert, just a dedicated Norwich City fan and I think the world of her, proud to call her a fan of the club I adore! Bloody BAH to you too
Our victory over Man City has been awarded the LG Performance of the week award (The 2nd time we have won it this season after our victory over Newcastle United) https://www.canaries.co.uk/News/201...ch-city-lg-lma-performance-of-the-week-award/
Bloody hell you lot, I don't hate Delia, but too dress her up as a saint and then say she saved us with appointing McNally and subsequently Lambert without acknowledging that it was under her that we had reached that brink is stupid in my book. (She was in part responsible for taking us from the brink wen she first got involved) Delia is ultimately a well meaning fan but seems too now F all about running a club, the mess Webber inherited is testament too that and why weave lurched from positivity too near disaster more than once under her rain. Thats my reason four saying she took us their. She ain't the worst owna owt they're buy eh strech, ass long ass she are defuring aul futball desissions to somewon LLLL. It apeers their kan bee know koment too tha debtremint off st Delia, eeven a pursnel oponion aboot anne unseamely outbuhrst. She were a drunking twaat thart dhay. Baa!
Like any fickle fan of a top flight side they turn on the owner's on the back of a poor display. Yeah Pukki missed a sitter but we did ok
A bit of "what did the Romans ever do for us" here General. She appears to be damned if she does and damned if she doesn't.
Some great observations from Robin Sainty - The Australian fast bowler Rodney Hogg once described England's erudite 1980s cricket captain Mike Brearley as having a degree in people, and if that was the case then Farke must have a Doctorate based on his ability to get the very best out of every one of his players. The way in which Alex Tettey, Ibrahim Amadou and Sam Byram came into the team and played as if they'd always been there was reminiscent of what happened last season when City had injuries, and shows how strong the squad actually is. In midweek, Raheem Sterling had been virtually unplayable for England against Kosovo, yet Byram kept him very quiet, while Amadou, primarily a midfielder, produced a commanding display alongside Ben Godfrey in the centre of defence and Tettey was the midfield destroyer of old.
