Given an awful ride by an inexperienced lass in a girls race last time but the suspicion is that it was just a final tune up for this. Danny Tudhope in the saddle tomorrow so no hard luck stories expected.

I’m not a massive rugby fan, but I’ve gone for South Africa to win the World Cup at 9/2. Massive game first up for them against New Zealand but we see.

Peachy Carnehan is really interesting at Newcastle, course form is good and interesting that they are returning to track rather than going to the more regular haunt of Wolves.

I’ve said elsewhere that I cannot abide Rugby and the thing that always makes me laugh / rant (delete as appropriate) about the thing is why when football fans misbehave is it called ‘hooliganism’, why when chavs are naughty is it labelled ‘rioting’ but when Rugby followers do the exact same thing its described as ‘good natured high jinks’?!? Answers on a postcard please to the usual address.

Also the thing is full of ‘social climbers’ with no real interest in Rugby whatsoever but in attendance because they think it will ‘advance’ them. Remember your proletarian roots people and give the whole thing an enormous swerve.

And don’t even get me started on those types who call the ‘Rugby World Cup’, ‘The World Cup’…

4:55 Ayr - Three Castles 9/1. If and thats a big IF the horse goes on todays ground it could be way overpriced. Best form is on softer ground. Didn't see out the trip on good ground last time out over 12f. Drops back to a mile today, a trip it won over back in June. Its last win came over 10f a little under 6 weeks ago in a race that doesn't look too shabby in terms of form (2nd and 4th have both won since). Horse looks good enough, top jockey on board. Ground very much a concern but worth risking a few quid in my opinion. Win bet.

In the Ayr Bronze Cup the first two in the betting, Pendleton and Tommy G look very skinny at about 4/1 each. Best of luck if backing them but not for me.

I prefer the look of Shallow Hal, who is the top-weight. He won a couple of times last season but has not had a win this season. On the plus side, he is on a mark of 85 and that is two pounds lower than when he was beaten by a neck in second place in a Handicap. His form last autumn was good and it is interesting that he has been absent and perhaps targeted at this race. A course and distance winner, I think Shallow Hal should run really well and at 12/1 is a bit of value.

William Hill offer six places and although shorter at 11/1 the extra place could be helpful.

Ayr Bronze Cup Shallow Hal 11/1 EW six places

Good early speed from Shallow Hal but he weakened disappointingly. Ran as if he probably needed the race but a bit disappointing all the same. The short priced favourite was 5th. I still can't get a handle on why people back at 7/2 in big handicap races but they don't win often enough to make it a profitable strategy. It won't stop silly prices in huge fields though.

The race went to an outsider and well done to anyone who backed any of those who got the 16 grand tricast or the 66/1 4th placed horse!
