Musk is having to defend himself for calling Unsworth (the guy who organised the Thai football team rescue) a paedo guy...said yesterday that it is just an expression used in South Africa for creepy men. He is being sued by Unsworth. Not a term to throw around on social media without considering its true meaning....once it's out there, it sticks like mud. And it diminishes what is a truly horrific crime.
Yeah that's a truly awful song. Trying desperately to be funny, but that is just cringe of the highest order.
There's competive rivalry and there's tribalism. Football fans seem to be one of few sports fans who can't tell the difference and engage in pathetic rubbish like pissing on seats, literally attacking each other, ripping out seats, throwing things at each other, forming pathetic groups of thugs like the 657 crew and headhunters and zulus and whatever ridiculous names they call themselves, hurling racist abuse at opposition players and fans (and then denying it's racist) and not being able to sit among people who support the other team because the presence of someone who happens to support them is beyond their ability to control themselves. Funny, you don't hear of cricket fans doing that. Or rugby fans. Or any other sport. Except Philadelphia Eagles fans strangely. Obviously I'm not referring to all football fans.
Competitive rivalry is tribalism. It's our instinct to form groups and then compete with each other, previously for resources, and when resources were low, to wipe each other out to reduce population and ensure resources could recover while also ensuring the its fittest who repopulate. Completely obsolete instinct these days, but evolution is slow which is why we need to find other outlets for it, largely sport. Aligning yourself with one of two different teams fighting over 3 points effectively imitate that. But yeah, some people take it too far, and I think with football being the most popular sport it attracts the most tribal people and puts them in one place so it's hard to avoid this sort of thing happening. But I will say I think what you are seeing would be more widespread and you would see more 'tribes' forming around skin colour, religion etc if it wasnt for football and sport providing the outlet. But yeah, have to keep trying to reduce the harmful, destructive side of it.
I wouldn't disagree with any of that but don't think that detracts from his point, not all tribalism is a bad thing.
OK, fair point. Perhaps tribalism is the wrong word. I guess just supporting a team, however 'nicely' you do it, is still fairly tribal...
For me tribalism is also an 'all in this together' type of feeling, which maybe is a better way of applying it to the nice side of the game.
I apologise for turning this big match thread into a politics thread. Please take this picture of a beautiful (as far as they go) Pompey lass as compensation.
