Could have been ours if we'd have been able to stump up 2.5m to trigger his release clause. He even publicly admitted he wanted to come to us. He's a life long fan of Sunderland aswell as being from the area.

I think signing him would have guaranteed us promotion, and severely dented Peterborough's i just hope we dont end up regretting it...

Penny-pinching, hoping to get him for nowt in Summer. Undoubtedly, we won't. Similar to the Maja situation imo - he stays, we go up. Simple. But we took the money. A poor decision, in the long term.

Yes unfortunately that is the case. Pretty shyte really when you think of how much we paid for Grigg.
Like i said it would have severly dented Peterborough's chances whilst significantly improving our chances of promotion, so it would have been a win win situation.

I think Donald is down to his last fiver now and 2.5 mil is a lot for league one to be fair. It'll be interesting to see what happens in January with the Dell boys cash behind us.

I doubt its Donald's last fiver, but the club needs to remain within the restraints of EFL conditions. Unfortunately, we put a lot of our eggs into one basket (Grigg), and 2.5 million is a lot of money in league-one.

We're going to be operating under the same restraints with the Dell boy's, but hopefully they will get us more revenue through sponsorship and possibly the stadium naming rights (The Dell Boy Stadium?? :emoticon-0102-bigsm) which will allow us more freedom with spending.

I'm relying on my team-mates to know where I'm going to put the ball. It's not about looking where they are, it's about putting the ball in the position they should be in. It's about game knowledge."

Even if we had bought him, no guarantee that are other players would be in the place they should be....

He might well have been the number 10 to fire us to the league title.

A 3 behind Mcnulty of McGeady, Maguire and Maddison is dynamite.

I do think it was financial, our whole summer was based around financial decisions.

I think having had his fingers well and truly burned with Grigg he is now quite rightly reluctant to be held to ransom, Maddison looks the real deal at the moment and our midfield is not up to standard, so it was a chance missed I agree. But as with all transfers there is a risk involved and 2,5 million is a lot of money at this level for a player who is out of contract in the summer, just a shame that Peterborough could afford to hold out but thats life. He may yet join us who knows, but in the meantime, we need to sort ourselves out and get the points on the board that will see us in a strong position next window.

It is more to do with the wage budget yeah but if Donald had money to spend we probably wouldn't have relied on free transfers as much as we did. Like you say we gambled everything on Grigg and overpaid because they had us over a barrel.

I'm sure the new lads will find a way of pumping some money into the team, I don't think many would be opposed to selling the naming rights if it meant we could spend.

Its funny to think we paid over 2m for players like Mavrias and Karlsson not that long ago to play for our reserves, and now we cant even afford to pay a similar fee for someone that would be one of the best players in the team. It shows how much we've fallen as a club.

The lad was the one I wanted in the summer, for obvious reasons, and I really thought we’d go for it.

Peterborough actually offered him to us and we declined. Their chairman said on record.

We didn’t have the money, that simple, who knows what happens in January though, if we have the money there may well be a deal to be done, Darragh who owns Peterborough is a smart businessman, he’d take a fee in January I’d imagine.

The way he celebrated when he scored against us, he didn't look like a life long Sunderland fan!!

I think it was more an F.U. to the fact we declined signing him.

Might be a good reason to forget him for now and just get on with it.

Disagree totally - you can't let the lunatics run the asylum - the money we got for him was significantly more than the money we'd have got - and HE said he wasn't playing for us anymore after saying he'd sign a new deal only 2 weeks earlier. Not sure how cutting him loose was a bad decision - maybe with hindsight but, at the time, it was the right call. We offered him everything him and his agent asked for and he didn't sign.

He never said he wouldn't play, just that he wouldn't sign the deal being offered. We should have let him run down his contract.

People have said he wouldn't have put a shift in but I think that's pure bullshit. There have been countless examples in the past of players saying they want to leave a club, bosses putting their foot down, and they play just as well til the end of their contract (or sign a new one in the end). Levy has done it plenty of times, e.g. Eriksen this summer. Of course he would have kept performing, he would have been playing for a big deal at the end of his time with us.

You can say it's hindsight but I said it before he left and I've said it ever since, and been proved right - if I could see it (and thousands of others as well I might add), why couldn't those in charge?

danstheman i like the idea of 'the uncle Albert stadium' has a nice ring about it, should have kept Maja till the summer, then signed Maddison/Toney. Are we going to have the same situation with Kimpioka ? and what are these financial regulations ? Man u, Man c can spend what they want so why can't we.

Should link up well with Mbappe.

I reckon you're probably right, the interest was there and by that point so will be their motivation to sell. I'd be surprised if he preferred to sign a new contract with them over coming to us.
