Close of play, could have been a lot worse but for the Buttler/Leach rearguard action. Broad still to come, if they can manage 300+ there might be a game in it.

It was a typical England innings, punctuated with good shots, poor shots, and one player saving their blushes.

If, and it's a big if, they can add another 50, then barring Smith getting another big score, we might stand a chance of winning.

Smith has to fail at some point. Not sure which year it will be though.

If you lose the toss and are put in and get 300 then you can’t complain.

Let’s hope we can get to 300.

I think there is a pretty good chance. Buttler and Leach have started well this morning, and the Aussie bowlers are helping for once.

Smith and Labuschagne look like they could bat forever, especially with Broad and Woakes not really firing so far.

    Slightly ahead I would hope.

Bat for 5+ hours tomorrow and they'd need a special batsman to chase down.

They haven't got a special batsman have they?

    Have they?

We are in a very good position in this now, with the sun due to shine tomorrow and Aussies batting fourth.
And this bollocks about it being a dead rubber when we can draw the series.
Taking into account we'd probably have won the second test barring rain, and that was without Wood and Anderson ( would love to have seen him vs Smith), surely were playing to win the Ashes?

Whatever we say about the level of cricket being played, at least there is never a dull moment and good entertainment. A good day yesterday for England, Atrcher bowled well, and Curren looks to have brought a different dimension to the bowling attack.

Interesting to read that Curran and Marsh were brought up playing cricket in each other's gardens, and Marsh's family took in the Curren's when their place was taken over by Mugabe's lot in Zimbabwe.

Also, James Patterson was brought up in Cleethorpes and is still a Grimsby fan.

Warner did quite well this time though.

    11 runs.
