I'm sure someone will be close to this subject and maybe they can throw some light on this. For years like many on here i've driven the 1079 to York., never been an issue at the roundabout at Shiptonthorpe (maybe i've been lucky at all times off day) regarding delays and yet now they are spending god knows how much on it, maybe just to help the Garden Centre.

Also, whats all the bollocks with the flood diversion work on Great Gutter Lane, Lowfield Road etc. We had one bad experience what was it 8 /9 years ago which was partly top do with uncleared drains and yet XXX amount of money is being sp***ed away for what..? I can understand similar work near the bridge for today surges etc.

    Enlighten me anyone,...

It's a myth that uncleared drains were to blame for those historic floods (and I know you wrote "in part"), one month's rain in 24 hours (not Allam time!) was the cause of flooding. The vast majority of the city is below the high tide level so relies on pumps to drain excess water, and said pumps couldn't cope with the sheer volume of water.

The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.

This attitude amazes me whenever public money is spent in our region. Repaving the city centre for city of culture, moan moan moan, regeneration of Humber Street, moan, moan, moan. Improve Castle Street and the A164, moan, moan, moan. Public art, moan, moan, moan. Flood alleviation schemes, moan, moan, moan. Would you rather no public money was spent in our region?

I am assuming if one replaced the asterisks with the correct letters, it would read: spaffed.

Okay, boring response time, I apologise in advance.

It's not just Langlands, although approximately one million elderly people drive in and out of there every hour. Possibly the same ones over and over again who for some reason think it's a good idea to eat at a garden centre because god knows, if you want good food you should dine at place that is primarily known for selling plants. It's also the petrol station. If you go for fuel and wish to exit onto the A1079 towards Market Weighton and beyond it literally takes a thousand years to get out. That's right, literally. I've lost several family members just waiting. It's quicker to go to McDonalds drive through, buy a **** cheeseburger for 99p, park up, eat it, clean your car out and put your rubbish in the bin, watch random dog walkers who think it's a great idea to let their dog **** in front of your car while you're eating and then watch them put their dog's crap in the bin, have a stroll, pick a fight with a Geordie who is there for some reason, go back for the 'Wrap of the day' to calm down and eat said poorly assembled wrap in the car, than it is to pull out of that godforsaken petrol station. McDonalds know this, that's why they sensibly built an exit out to the A614.

That's off peak traffic. You see, the A614 is some weird major artery for coast starved landlocked Yorkshire folk to get to Bridlington, or tow their caravans to Flamborough, and this much maligned crossroads (obviously not a crossroads, it's a roundabout that's become victim to the increase in traffic) is where the great A1079 and A614 intersect. Despite everyone who comes to this roundabout hoping to casually go straight on, fun loving work shy bastards have to wait for honest Yorkshire grafters wishing to experience the last dual carriageway on the way to York, maybe waving at Mr Chu's Grandma in Hayton along the way, and vice versa. I've regularly seen vehicles backed up on the A614 all the way to the well renowned Gallymoor Landfill Site about three miles away. Luckily, these heavily delayed motorists occasionally let you on to the roundabout out of McDonalds, otherwise I'd be writing this from there and be unwillingly penning the sequel to 'Supersize Me'.

I know nothing of this Great Gutter Lane of which you speak but with the predicted increase in rain fall and rise in sea level, perhaps that plays a part, and it's a form of future proofing infrastructure ultimately costing the tax payer less.

Castro recently wrote of laconic responses. This reply is certainly not an example.

As someone who used this route to take their kids to school and back for many years and regularly used the petrol station, I concur, it was a nightmare.

I also suspect the 8,000 homes and 200 businesses at risk of flooding in Willerby and Hull, probably think the flood alleviation scheme is money well spent.

Interesting reply from Des Head. The Great Gutter Lane bollocks is separate to the flood diversion bollocks.
Great Gutter Lane gets gridlocked where it meets the A164 so those road works are an improvement to put a roundabout in at the Riplingham Road deathtrap, Kirk Ella. Something that has been needed for yonks. The A164 Humber Bridge to Beverley is generally not fit for purpose, money is located to improve it at Jocks Lodge near Beverley. The Willerby roundabouts remain a problem with no solution apart from some relief is expected when the Riplingham Road roundabout is complete.
There are 3 separate flood alleviation schemes, 1Kirk Ella/Anlaby/Hessle, nearly complete, 2Great Gutter Lane/Willerby/Springhead, complete and 3Eppleworth Road/Cottingham/Orchard Park, nearly complete. Total spend around £60M to replace what was previously a series of primitive medieval ditches. I think it all protects more than 8000 homes and reduces insurance premiums.

I can think of literally scores of places it could and should have been spent over a period of years and hasn't. Lovely roads in Swanland as an example...

    But I appreciate the insight.

I've never really got the claims to elitism from some moving to Swanland. If the same criteria was applied to each, I reckon Swanland would score higher than most inner cities when it comes to deprivation, and most likely qualify for grant status. A house converted to a pub in most places is called a shebeen. It's an impoverished satellite housing estate, as are most of the villages that live off Hull.

I did that road for 14 years and lived to talk about it. Sadly some didn't. I often did a short cut through North Duffield to Skipworth then Escrick and onto the A19 then onto the A64...I hated the A1079 with a passion and have never used it again since I quit working in York..

Quite possibly, I heard recently and I've no reason to doubt it, that at least three of the houses on Kemp Road don't even have swimming pools.

There's a Kemp Road? I must buy a house down there. It would match my Aston Martins number plate, K3MPS...
