    Hello, crew. Hope everyone well.

Mr Charlton takes a very interesting one up to Carlisle, of the morrow, for its handicap bow. COCHISE (5.35) is a nicely bred sort being a son of the Listed placed mare, Ship’s Biscuit (peak rating 100). After 3 runs in maiden / novice heats, over distances ranging from 10-12 furlongs, the old boy is stepped up to just over 14 furlongs tomorrow and runs off his introductory perch of just 64. This stamina test should suit as his dam stayed 2 miles no problem.

Furthermore, Cochise’s half-brother Mekong (peak rating 110) has certainly upheld family tradition by being a multiple winner and Group placed over 16 furlongs and Listed placed over 14 furlongs.

Now launched into handicaps and stepped up in trip I would expect Cochise to prove much better than his rating and as a result hopefully oblige at Carlisle.

    Good luck all.

It’s what you haven’t done. I was expecting a tip top review of a horse and it’s movement to the new yard. The owner and all things about the horses name.

    Kempton 8.30 - Kodiac Lass 8/1.
Trainer hitting form, good jockey booking, may upset the fav here.

I'm afraid I must also express a modicum of disappointment. The name of the beast (Cochise) offers ample opportunity for ribaldry in the form of "Native American" related punditry, but alas none was forthcoming. Something along the lines of "I have no reservations about tipping this one up, people"; "I fully expect Cochise to take the scalps of his rivals today"; "Today's opponents aren't Apache on Cochise"

Apologies. Yes, on review the write-up can be described as ‘lacking’. My head is hung in shame.

That 'apache' line is actually very good and, as a result of me missing that, any rebuke is justified.

I think some of the criticism of Sir Barney is unfair.People seem to have gone on the warpath without offering him a powwow or a chance to smoke a peace pipe.I hope this doesnt prove to be Sir Barneys last stand on here. The allegation that Sir Barney speaks with a forked tongue is unfair and i suggest he circles his wagons as High Noon approaches and maybe the cavalry will come to his rescue..

That’s how I should be introduced every time I appear on the forum. Albeit with a slight spelling alteration – Kneel, The Legend. That chap who does the voice over on ‘The X Factor’ could be employed to deliver it each time I’m on.

Incidentally, with Neil The Legend out The Lieutenant hasn’t had any runners since 1 September and has not one single future entry! Hurry back, old boy, as our sport needs you.

While we are all on puntastic pun form and speaking of The Lieutenant he’s actually got an unraced 4YO filly in his ranks who will have fans of the old pun purring when she appears on a racetrack. I won’t spoil it by saying her name but suffice to say some will want to leave the old girl well alone whilst others will remain in her fan club for years. And the great man owns the filly himself as well. Well bred sort as well - the 4YO filly that is.

Obviously didn't lived up to expectations when with William Haggas (owned by Oppenheimer). Has taken well to the NH game with 4 times in the money from 6 starts over hurdles for Charlie Mann. Maybe going didn't suit when unplaced the other 2 runs. Back from a break now and trainer amongst the winners recently.

Cochise has just been announced as a non-runner, I'm afraid. Regular readers hide your disappointment stoically.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that Constantinople was on the drift in the St Leger betting, suggesting he wasn't going to run. He is on his way to Australia and it is said that the Melbourne Cup is his target.

I also noticed him in the betting for the Triumph Hurdle but that would seem a non-starter, so I wouldn't touch the 25/1 offered for that one. New connections stated that Constantinople is a "False" favourite for the Melbourne Cup with some bookmakers and I would have to agree with that given that they never tried the horse beyond 12F. I am still hopeful that Cross Counter can defend his crown, having looked like chasing Stradivarius around in Europe was not really his bag.

Looking at the St Leger, it seems a woeful renewal. An ex-handicapper is hot favourite and it's a Group 3 contest to my eyes. Certainly a farce of a Group 1 and laughable as a "Classic" It's merely an exercise in sifting the dross for talent.

Elsewhere this week Siskin skips the National Stakes as expected. He is a 6F horse and swerves the 7F race. I have a feeling Armory may go to the Champagne Stakes in order to avoid Pinatubo. I think he is well behind the Godolphin horse and has little chance of beating him in the National Stakes. In the Champagne Stakes he sits behind Mum's Tipple and Threat in the betting and that would seem more feasible, especially if Hannon decides not to run both of his. If Armory does go to Doncaster it leaves the National Stakes looking like a penalty kick for Pinatubo, with only Arizona looking anything like the class to mount a challenge. In the Moyglare Aidan O'Brien has to give best to Jessica Harrington in terms of strength in the entries, with the latter trainer fielding Albigna, Alpine Star and Cayenne Pepper in the list of possibles. Albigna is early favourite and she won a Group 2 last time, looking as if she now needs the 7F trip of the Moyglare. Roger Varian's Daahyeh will be a big contender having only been beaten by Raffle Prize thus far.

I notice Stewards Cup winner Khaadem was reported to have injured a foot in the Sprint Cup. Connections stated that he had had a problem in the build up to the race but seemed sound the two days before the race so they decided to run him. Going into the Sprint Cup they were not worried about the soft ground but Jim Crowley reported that Khaadem would not let himself down on the day, whether that was due to the ground, or the injury, they are not sure. Khaadem may run again this season.

Whatever the truth of it, Khaadem ran to a mark in the 80's in the Sprint Cup and the horse who had won a Stewards Cup with ease off a mark of 107 had put up a serious performance in a big field at Goodwood with little to suggest any fluke about it.

After the Stewards Cup the Official Handicapper raised Khaadem to 116 and only one horse in the Sprint Cup had a higher mark. Dream Of Dreams was rated 119 but that was a highly dubious mark for me, given that he ran behind Blue Point, who was having his second race of the week and almost certainly won despite being below form. The Handicapper has already knocked a pound off Dream Of Dreams and I reckon a few more will be shaved off in time.

Not sure why they would invent a problem that did not exist and for a horse to under-perform so markedly solely on account of the ground is a bit extreme.

Shock horror the colt runs poorly and it must be down to a bruised foot rather than the horse not being good enough. If they had a problem in the week up to the race, why didn’t they announce it and more importantly should the horse have run?

I think this is the typical cover story for a horse they feel will be a sire of the future. Either that or they rolled the dice with a horse who shouldn’t have run but did because others were ruled out.

Why would a horse rated exactly the same as the winner not be good enough? That makes no sense.

They trotted the horse on the two days before the race and he seemed perfectly sound. Had they said there was a problem and the horse then won the race they would have been accused of putting the punters away.

Khaadem travelled quite well early in the race and can't have been feeling anything at that stage. When asked to stretch he found nothing and weakened away. His effort was rated 88 by the Racing Post and that compares to 119 in the Stewards Cup. That is more than two stones difference and it's ridiculous to be thinking that Khaadem ran anywhere near his form.

If the horse was in a conspiracy to be invented as a sire they would surely have retired him to stud citing the injury, rather than be talking about a possible tilt at the Champion Sprint?

It was a bit of an unsatisfactory race. The Tin Man stumbled at the start and Brando bled from the nose. Adding that to Khaadem's woeful effort makes it potentially flatter the winner.
