Can was capable of moments of brilliance, but he wasn't as good as he himself thought he was. Difficult to stop when he got up a head of steam, but he could only run in the direction he was pointed. He got caught in possession too often in dangerous areas, and wasn't mobile enough to get himself out of it easily. Also, there's the fact that he didn't think we were good enough for him, and chose to go and win things in an easier league rather than prove himself here. It's a no from me.
We know you don't rate Hendo, and you're entitled to that opinion - but the point is valid. Hendo does his share of running around and closing down to win back the ball when needed, but Can simply isn't made that way and he's too easy to get past. He would only be useful in a more creative role, and that isn't where we're lacking. Fabinho is filling the role that I think Can would be expected to, and is doing a better job, even with no legs.
I think the stats would prove you wrong on this. Can was actually very good defensively, and far more efficient when it came it to pressing. On consistency, Hendo and Gini are definitely no more consistent than Can.
I think the stats would also say when Can played we finished fourth and champions league runners up The year after without Can we came second with our highest ever points total and were champions league winners
I'd rather Henderson in our midfield than can, we play a very high energy game and can always reminded me of a dad playing with kids, chugging up and down trying his best with the occasional good pass thrown in. He was one of those players that when he started you where always hopeful but he never delivered on a consistent basis. Henderson's not the greatest but you know you'll get a good performance out of him every game.
Omg. You can tell it’s international week. We’re actually debating whether we’d prefer Can over champions league captain Hendo. I may as well give my view then....I wouldn’t have Can over any of our midfield. We have a champions league winning midfield. And you could argue that when fit and in form, Keita and/or Ox make our midfield. Our midfield plays to our strengths as a team. I’ve come to realise (slowly) that the likes of Hendo and Gini bring much more than meets the eye.....sure, Hendo can be a bit ‘agricultural’ but that also overloooks his industry and leadership. I think we all wish we had a playmaker and goals in that 3 but Klopp would not allow that at the expense of the press. Ever. Can, is decent....but Klopp wouldn’t offer him the deal he wanted when he wanted it.....nor was he stressed about losing him.....that tells me everything I need to know. So Can? No thanks. I’d prefer to have Ford back tbh.
It wasn't really a debate, more a foregone conclusion that we wouldn't have Can back. Only really Jimmy that thought otherwise.
Reading a little more on this, Mandzukic and Chiellini also omitted from CL squad. WTF's going on there?
