Great song, off Neil’s first solo album I believe. Some say it’s about Stephen Stills, although Stills says it’s autobiographical.
Yeah it's autobiographical, but can always be about another person too. So many of Young's songs are about observations of people, or elements of himself that he sees in other people.
I'd followed Simple Minds' progress from Sons and Fascination [1981] onward. For a while there I thought they might usurp XTC as my favourite band. But that wasn't seriously going to happen. And by 1985 I thought they'd sold out with All The Things She Said. And maybe they did. But it's still a bloody good tune, and I still bought the album it came from:
Stolen from another thread: Great, great song by JM. It was the first ever John Martyn track I heard. By the end of the album I was itching for early finish Friday so that I the time to buy Solid Air. What has always made the hair stand up on the back of my neck with this track is the way that that double bass trills up and down. It is absolute magic. I used to take the album to hi-fi shops and say "play that track" and close my eyes.
I had the joy of seeing John and Danny at Warwick Uni in late 1973, a few months after Solid Air came out, and most of the set was from the album. The sound was perfect, the double bass came up through the floor, and the guitar looping was the best I’d ever heard. One of the best gigs I ever went to. Absolute magic.
Going back to the Beatles, I was just led to this gem by the YouTube algorithm. It features the band on German TV in about 1963 and the sound, for once, isn’t completely drowned out by screaming girls! Edit: It can’t be German TV, must be somewhere Scandinavian, Sweden?
I always think the 80s and 90s are sometimes poorly served by reputation and what is regurgitated these days as representative of the times. Anyone watching the TOTPs reruns currently may also notice some strange blind spots and favourtisms by the show. Its nice to remember bands like the Cocteau Twins provided an alternative. I've just bought the 2lp best of, though possesing most of their stuff already. Shimmering guitars and an angel to sing you to bed. This is my favorite track from 1990 - In what seems to be an occasional ongoing series of turntable porn here it is playing on my Manticore Mantra. Included really to show what my wife pointed out the other day, even the decks are going with a Saints colours theme.
The simple combination of guitar and Liz's angelic vocals is just sublime...don't ask me what the **** she is singing about though!
A quick google for the lyrics leave me even more confused, talk about batsh*t crazy. Liz just uses her voice like another instrument, stunningly.
I do like Alanis Morissette but I do know she is not everyones cup of tea as they say. I do like her version of Crazy
A very happy what would have been a 73rd Birthday to Freddie Mercury. The ultimate showman. I have posted bits of this before, but the ULTIMATE performer whatever you think of him/Queen Just go to 1:35 and 2:57 to get those goosebumps. The 80s, what a great time to live.
Still love that guy! I’ve probably said this before on here, but I saw my mum and dad the day after Live Aid, and they were full of the whole thing, but mostly of course over Freddie’s performance. My dear old dad said “that bloke could take over the world if he wanted to!”
Yes, a total showman. Taken far, far too soon. Even though I was 16 in 1985 so should have a good memory of it, that is basically the only performance I remember. Even now I am singing and moving to it. #sadgit.
