Apologies for mentioning another match day CR. Today marks the 73rd Anniversary of the first Hull City match played at the opening of Boothferry Park. Reminded of this by someone who was there in the pouring rain a day before his 8th birthday. I remember a few on this forum saying they attended but most of them have left or no longer post.
One of my first games watching Hull City was against Millwall on 27 December 1965 there was a huge crowd - over 40k I think - I was sat over the small fence on the side of the pitch with many other children - it was a top of the table clash and we won 1 0 - own goal I seem to remember - the very next day on December 28th we played Millwall again in London but we lost 3 0 - two games in two days plus all the travelling to get there for both teams - unbelievable when you think about it
Agree with the back 4 Chazz , been saying since first game of season to play full backs like that until we get a decent left back
I was also at the game, so you were one of the lucky ones that got a ringside seat. I was in the North stand and was jealous of those that got where you were.
There was a period of a couple of years where there were games on Christmas day then the next day, playing the same side. I recall City 1v0 Millwall, Millwall 3v0 City, the following year I think it was City 1v0 Huddersfield, then Huddersfield 1v0 City. After that I'll to consult the records.
Looking forward to watching the game later, I hope the pieces of the jigsaw finally come together and we get a complete performance for the full 90+ minutes. If we do, then I can see us coming away with the 3 points. I think Lichaj and Kingsley will be back, and maybe Magennis might get a start, but there again Grant might not want to drop Eaves for fear it dints is confidence further.
When I was listening to the penalties other night and they said Eaves is stepping up , hasn’t scored for City yet , I thought bad move . Yes it was a chance to knock one in back of the net , but also the chance to knock what must be his ever decreasing confidence down another peg. Hope it hasn’t too much but I reckon Magennis will start today
I was at that game charon, amazing crowd. I had just turned 17 and went with my cousin from Manchester who wasn’t a football fan and was terrified of the crowd.
Can't see him changing his formation. Sticking to his beliefs will make or break him. Personally i think its a bit naive when he hasnt yet got the right players for it. Hopefully after the break Elder is fit and is a player, and Lichaj stays fit. It might, just might, start to click. I'd start with Magennis at CF. 1-2 City.
He doesn't seem to want to change the formation does he ? Lichaj been back is good , is Elder available ? We need to sort the defence out and get the same players in there for a few games , we can't be changing it all the time
Over 35,000 for the Huddersfield game at BP, over 32,000 at Huddersfield the following Day. Both things we won't see again. That Huddersfield game was the last time we had over 30,000 for a League game.
He could well start with Magennis, but it is always a tough call, do you keep faith with the striker who isn't scoring, hoping he gets a goal, which often triggers a run of scoring or drop him, which is likely to affect his confidence. Players need a run of games to get up to speed, but the burning question is, how long to you wait?
A group of us from school used to go to all of City's home games and one of our regulars had collapsed and died a few days before (16th December). He was a smashing lad and I remember the game more for our sadness - other than that it was bitterly cold and a relatively dull game in an otherwise very exciting season. Millwall had an amazing home record at the time so the defeat at their place wasn't too much of a surprise.
Pennington at LB ? Interesting , has he played there much ? Hope he gets some support from the midfield
McCann has already broken one of his opening interview statements - I don’t play square pegs in round holes. Step forward Pennington a right footed centre half at left back
