It's harder to find a loan to a league 2 club than a Blue Sq, especially from L1. L2 clubs despite some budgets being lower than conference teams see there squads as full time pro's, long term deals and Premiership loans. Being offered a Charlton youth player out of L1 to solve you're problems doesn't look the same to them, he would almost certainly spend more time on the bench than starting, hence knocking his development back. As for the conference teams, their squads are often smaller, players move on more often due to month to month P/T deals, so these loans are often cheap and easy for them, whilst seen as a big deal as they're getting a F/T player, when they may not be. That's why our players go to the Non League
SLP today saying loads of League 2 teams want Doherty on loan, and we still might yet send out Benson and Smith (thats the guy from Darlo's name, right?)
Some good points there Hell-Bent I was just about to post that Super but you beat me to it. Is it not a bit risky loaning out Doherty when Mambo already has been? Leaves us with just one CB to cover. Also I'm disappointed to see Smith may be loaned out, I know he's nowhere near the first team yet but I was half hoping to see him given a game (or a cameo) in the JPT.
I guess Mambo can get himself back from Ebbsfleet if there's a crisis. I'll give him a lift if need be. If Smith and Benson were to be loaned out Popo might get some more game time, which I'd like to see
Same from me, Ben - but I'm still pretty unhappy about this move. If I were him, I think I'd be seeing the writing on the wall - great shame.
I don't see a problem here. Mambo needs games. Remember a year ago he didn't impress at Eastbourne (unlike Jenkinson) and was eventually dropped to the bench. Since then he's had one solid game v Reading, he's not even come on as a sub in a League 1 game yet. It's not really a surprise that League 2 clubs weren't after him. Hopefully he'll do well at Ebbsfleet and later on in the season get a chance at a League 2 side. Even though he's nearly 20, he's still very young for a centre back. Going on loan doesn't mean Powell has already decided he doesn't see a future here for him. It was only a few months ago Powell gave him another years contract. Eventually Doherty will be gone and if Mambo has impressed in that time he might well step up to being 4th choice centre back. Players can still break through in their early 20s. I have doubts that he'll make it with us but a run of games will do him far more good than occasional sub appearances for our first team.
I too would prefer to see him with a L2 club, however, Ebbsfleet will be a stern test indeed for him. They are an ill equipped side at this level and will all but always be the underdog, so he will be under constant pressure, from battling P/Ters trying to make an impression on the young Charlton boy.
Just had a look, they lost 3-1 at home to Fleetwood, Mambo played the full the game. Fleetwood are 7th, Ebbsfleet 20th by the way.
He played a full 90 minutes today, but it was a bit of a baptism of fire, as they ran up against Magno Vieira and Jamie Vardy at their sharpest, a serious handful.
