Plymouth City Council Statement on Plymouth Argyle Football Club In response to the recent news that a private sector deal securing the future of Plymouth Argyle Football Club has still not been forthcoming, Plymouth City Council leader Vivien Pengelly is issuing the following statement: Councillor Vivien Pengelly, Leader of Plymouth City Council, said: âPlymouth City Council is deeply saddened by the current situation with regards the status of Plymouth Argyle Football Club. It is extremely disappointed that no private sector funded solution has yet been forthcoming to ensure the survival of the cityâs 125 year old professional football club. The City Council would like to be clear that it considers it important that a city the size and status of Plymouth should not, if at all possible, be without a professional football club. âWe are therefore prepared to work to help ensure the survival of the club and protect wider community benefits. That would include the consideration of the purchase of Home Park on a commercial basis. Any decision would of course have to be subject to appropriate due diligence checks and Council approval.â
Now that is the first bit of good news Argyle related for god knows how long. Obviously Brent will announce his plans to buy the club now. **** off Heaney, Ridsdale and more immediately STB/Shrewsbury Town.
At least if PCC re-own the ground then it takes a lot of heat off the club and probably a would be buyer. The rent would probably be more in keeping with the amount the club could afford and no doubt any lease agreement would be for a long period as I think was previously the case.
So James Brent hasn't said no.........but a guarded, I will continue. I know Heaneys words are completely meaningless........but I would still like to read that he personally has withdrawn from the scene,he will not give away £300.000 surely without a fight. Pengelly will have to fight against council opposition, which could be time consuming. There will be ratepayers who will not consider this a good use of taxpayers money. Where is Gats friend Peter Ridsdale......is he keeping his powder dry at the moment, seeing how things develop ? Brendan Guilfoyle is he still involved or has he discovered that things go better without him !!!
Political opposition should not be forthcoming in this plymborn. I remember the Labour leader standing on the balcony of the Civic Centre a few years ago when there were 2 promotions in his tenure. He loved the football club and wanted their babies at that time. He is still Labour leader in the City. I have to say that the noises being made by all concerned here are encouraging. Not quite there but moving in the right direction is my mid term report on them. If this is going to happen then I suspect we will know fairly soon in Argyle takeover terms.
In the short term it will cost the council a lot, as Plymborn rightly states there will be opposition from some players on the council who will defend the taxpayers in Plymouth areas where they could not give a toss about the club. I think after the rent agreement is drawn up the council will approve it. I think we will be clear by the start of October. Although we could have had this sorted in July, Brendan!!
Hey hobo...........if the council buy Home Park will that mean your box near the Mayflower be liable for council tax in future.............maybe you need to put it on wheels and move it about a bit.........keep one step ahead.
