If he's got no other offers maybe a short term contract would tempt him ? But there again there's Evans.

He would rip up this League for us and in the Championship too but like you say Evans doesn't have any ambition for our club.

Was thinking the same about Kightly who has just retired. There are quite a few of these 30 something players needing a gig and Town should be snapping up talented and experienced out of favour top flight and Championship players looking to kickstart their careers, especially forwards. Unfortunately none of them are going to play for us for free.

When is the last time this guy scored regularly? Almost half a decade ago at Swansea. His injury record since 2017 has been awful - he effectively missed the entire 2017/18 campaign with a cruciate ligament injury! We don't need anymore injury-prone players in this squad, particularly someone who can command a fairly high weekly wage.

Don't get me wrong, I think we need to get another striker in. However, I'm hoping we are aiming a little higher than Wilfried Bony. And I hope we're going to go for somebody who is younger, fitter, and has a far better goalscoring record over the past few years.

Nuggets - we won't be signing anyone who is younger, fitter and has a better scoring record. If we are to get a striker in, it will be another Will Keane - short term or loan deal.
I'd sign him on a pay as you play deal - give him 20k per week and let him prove himself. A half fit Bony is surely better than who we're probably gonna sign.

£20k a week?! Even on a pay as you play deal, we aren't going to be handing that out to anybody while we're in League One. Reportedly, we only had Bart on a £20+k a week contract and that was when we were in the division above.

Hopefully there is a striker available that meets the criteria of being relatively young and has a decent goalscoring record. I'd even take that player on loan, if we had a realistic chance of signing that player permanently (such as our situation with Garbutt).

I see we're linked with Kane Vincent-Young from Colchester United, exactly the type of player we should be targeting. Right-back, 23, consistent performer for a League Two side - I'm guessing we're throwing Emmanuel in that deal.

Over the rest of the season, that would only equate to around 700-800k.

To get a decent striker, even at this level, you're gonna probably need to fork out 1m (add wages on top of that).

So, to get a £28m player from a few seasons ago, for only 800k, to me thats got to be worth it - as i said above, even at 60% fitness he'll score for fun in this league

In saying all that, there's no way in a million years we're going to sign him, so this is all hypothetical.

If Bony is at Newport he obviously loves the game and want to be playing.

Give him £50k / month on a rolling monthly contract and a £5k goal bonus and the potential of a longer and better paid contract after a certain time / promotion.

For virtually no risk or outlay you might get a top striker firing on all cylinders for us if he stayed fit.

If we had three or four good options up front I wouldn't say it's worth a punt. But we don't, so it is.

Otherwise we'll end up much like last season, wondering where the goals are going to come from.

As our owner has frequently shown, such creative thinking is way beyond his ability!

Fair enough, but I don't think Bony is the reliable, consistent goalscorer that we need. He's been a shadow of his former self for about five years now. Okay, so he might be able to keep fit for a while and he may enjoy League One level, but clubs aren't exactly jumping over themselves to offer him a contract.

Regardless, it's evident we need a striker to come in before the end of the transfer window.

Don't necessarily disagree but the risk to reward ratio is worth a punt IMHO.

Can't really even see us bringing anybody else in under the circumstances... which is shocking. The owner actually believes pissing money down on loans if they come in from a big club is somehow worthwhile.

He never relied on pace but he has strength, skill and guile in abundance and would be way too good for any defence in League 1 and most in the Championship. Yes this all hypothetical as our owner has no ambition for our football club and will probably sanction an absolute no mark player on loan.

Its tempting huh? he's a hell of a player on his day. but he's been missing for a long time. If the deal was put together and he passed a medical id be for it. i saw The Beast play for gillingham and he has 0 pace but all muscle, awareness, hold up play, some skill and there ability to bring the rest into the game in forward positions. hence he's still going strong! We'll face him when we play Wycombe...but Bony would be very effective if, IF we got him in and he stayed on the pitch...

There's a buzz factor too... he's got an Africa Cup of Nations trophy, a League Cup trophy, played in a World Cup and all the rest. That can't hurt in the dressing room.
