Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time for a brand new season of hopes and dreams, laughter and tears, fabulous shots, terrible misses, appalling defensive errors, match-saving tackles, superb saves, poor parries, abysmal refereeing, and of course... VAR! Saints travel approximately 268 miles slightly west of due north to Turf Moor, Burnley, where the Lancashire club have plied their trade ever since 1883, making it the oldest continuously-used ground of any of the 49 clubs to have graced the English Premier League. Saints’ record at Burnley isn’t great: we have drawn 1-1 there in each of the previous 2 seasons but we have to go back to 27th October 2007 to our last League victory there, with goals by Bradley Wright-Phillips, Jason Euell, and Stern John giving us a 3-2 win in the Championship. Chris McCann and Ade Akinbiyi scored for the Clarets that day. A 100% record in preseason will naturally give all Saints fans hope for a good start to the season. Ralph Hasenhüttl has tried a few formations but may well revert to 3 at the back for Burnley unless we manage to acquire a world-class centre back in the final days of the transfer window who can slot straight into Ralph’s favoured 4-2-2-2. Who will start? Presumably Che Adams, Danny Ings, Nathan Redmond, and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg are fairly certain but all other positions are up for grabs. Will we see Moussa Djenepo given a run? Will Sofiane Boufal rip Burnley to shreds? We will see! Dear football Gods, As a reward for not drinking last season and seeing one win on the road I ask for only three things: - No Var - A debut goal for Adams - A clean sheet I'm sure you'll agree that this isn't too much to ask and I'm not being unnecessarily greedy. Yours, Libby
Burnley were slow starters last year in the league, despite getting some early Euro action against the mighty Aberdeen. Hope they are similarly sluggish this time ! 2-0 Saints!
We don't have a 100% record in pre season? We drew the first game 1-1. I suppose we have a 100% record of not losing in pre season. Reckon this one will finish 1-1. JRod to score for them lot because it’s inevitable.
